Mortal Kombat 2 writer Jeremy Slater has promised that the sequel to last year’s martial arts epic will be bigger, better, and bloodier. All the things you could possibly want in a Mortal Kombat follow-up. Mortal Kombat 2 has now been officially given the green light, with Slater taking to social media to declare his excitement over joining the team and bringing the hugely popular video game to live-action once again.

As well as being everything that a Mortal Kombat sequel should and could be, Jeremy Slater continues to keep the hype train going by stating unequivocally that Mortal Kombat 2 will “blow people’s minds.” Presumably, the writer means this metaphorically as opposed to viewing the movie resulting in a brutal finishing move come the end credits.

The first Mortal Kombat, which acts as a reboot of the live-action adaptations from the 1990s, was directed by Simon McQuoid and stars a host of recognizable characters from the video game including Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Lewis Tan as new character Cole Young. Mortal Kombat follows a washed-up MMA fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage or why he is being hunted down by Sub-Zero of the Lin-Kuei clan of assassins. Concerned for the safety of himself and his family, he seeks out a team of fighters who were chosen to defend the Earthrealm in a high-stakes battle against the forces of the Outworld.

Oddly, the tournament itself does not happen, with the characters instead having to fight for their lives against the forces of evil, who are trying to wipe them out before the titular Mortal Kombat even begins. Perhaps the sequel will see things play out differently.

New Line has now confirmed that it is officially developing a sequel to Mortal Kombat, and while the movie is still in the early stages, many of the original stars are expected to return. In fact, the likes of Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Mehcad Brooks can barely contain their excitement and have already taken to Twitter to announce their involvement.

While details of Mortal Kombat 2 remain largely unknown, it is expected that the follow-up will bring fan-favorite fighter Johnny Cage into the fray. Teased at the very end of the first movie, rumors have circulated ever since regarding the casting of the beloved character. A-list names such as Ryan Reynolds and James Marsden have been suggested by fans, with the most recent rumor claiming that Sons of Anarchy and Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam is being courted for the role.

WWE star The Miz has also put himself forward for the role of Johnny Cage saying, "Honestly...if I have a shot at it, I would definitely want to make sure that I give everything that I possibly can to make sure that not only the production company, the director are happy with the character that I get, but also the fans because they are the ones that are so adamant about Johnny Cage being in the movie. This is an iconic character in the Mortal Kombat franchise and it needs to be done right. If I'm the person to do it, then so be it. I'm ready to go!"

Before Mortal Kombat 2, Jeremy Slater will first bring the world of Marvel’s Moon Knight to life on Disney+.
