Who doesn't love a good romantic comedy? This genre has many different sub-genres to meet the needs of whatever you could be searching for, with all sorts of tropes added in for more substance. Some of the best feature major holidays, making it a cozy watch as Christmas or Thanksgiving rolls around. While there have been some iconic couples to come out of these movies; household names that people hold their relationships to, many are often toxic. It's easy to overlook it when you watch the film for the first time, or have it on in the background, but many couples that you might know and love, desperately need counseling. Here's a list of the most toxic couples from rom-coms.

7 Juliet and Mark - Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually
Universal Pictures

Love Actually features more than one toxic relationship, such as the heartbreaking story of Karen and Harry. However, Mark is actually a weirdo. Nine has stated that the movie has aged rather poorly throughout the years, since many of the relationships depicted have gone sour for viewers. They would be correct, especially when looking at the character of Mark, played by Andrew Lincoln. Mark is in love with his best friend's wife, Juliet, and the two have an emotional affair that's iconic for all the wrong reasons. When Mark shows up at Juliet's house, and does a semi-creepy grand gesture with tons of cue-cards, one can't help but wonder what would have happened if Juliet's husband opened the door instead.

6 Allie and Noah - The Notebook (2004)

The notebook
New Line Cinema

Allie and Noah's relationship starts off by Noah threatening to kill himself if she doesn't agree to a date with him. This already creates a red flag on the playing field. When it comes down to it, there is often a trope seen in romance movies that if the guy wants to pursue the girl, even if she's not interested, he'll disregard her feelings and chase after her until she reluctantly agrees. Also, in the montages shown of their relationship, they fight all the time, and their problems are solved with sex, meaning they never really solved anything. This led to their blowout breakup and the pining that took place throughout the years they spent apart.

5 Danny and Sandy - Grease (1978)

Grease Travolta
Paramount Pictures

You might be surprised to see this pair on the list, but when you really start thinking about it, Danny and Sandy's relationship wasn't good, at all. They come from two different worlds, which isn't a deal-breaker, but Danny is so ashamed of Sandy when she shows up to his school, that he has to act like he has no idea who she is in front of his friends. Also, the scene where they're at the drive-in is a huge red flag, as Danny doesn't respect Sandy telling him no, trying to force himself on her where everyone can see.

4 Kathleen and Joe - You’ve Got Mail (1998)

You've Got Mail
Warner Bros.

You've Got Mail is an extremely iconic romantic comedy, not only because of the cast members, but also because of the age-old story of enemies-to-lovers. However, when it comes down to it, Kathleen and Joe have a semi-toxic relationship, that ends up turning good at the end of the movie. Not to mention, that they were both in separate relationships while playing a game of pen pals, writing to each other every single day, which in return, created an emotional relationship between the two.

3 Hal and Rosemary - Shallow Hal (2001)

shallow hal
Twentieth Century Fox

It's hard to imagine if a movie like this would be made in today's climate, for the right reasons, but Jack Black made Shallow Hal a memorable movie, even though it has loads of fatphobia throughout the film. Obviously, there's a huge lesson to be learned by the end of the movie, and when Hal is cursed to only see women's inner beauty instead of their outwardly appearance, he falls for Rosemary, who's actually 300 pounds. When it's revealed that Rosemary looks completely different from what he expected, Hal is extremely cruel to her. Hence, the title of the movie.

2 Josh and Cher - Clueless (1995)

Paul-Rudd-As-Josh-Clueless-1995 (1)
Paramount Pictures

There are several things wrong with this relationship; where to begin? First thing; the age difference. It's clear that Josh is in college and has a more mature way of thinking, while Cher is still in high school and couldn't care less about what's happening on the news. Josh is often belittling Cher and talking down to her, simply because they don't share the same interests. Second thing; they are step-siblings! Cher's father married Josh's mom, and even though they divorced, Cher literally refers to Josh as her step-brother. Talk about a giant red flag.

1 Blane and Andie - Pretty in Pink

Pretty-In-Pink-1986
Paramount Pictures

The movie where Andie should've ended up single. MovieNetwork says that in the original ending, Ringwald's character was supposed to end up with Duckie, the best friend, even though Duckie wasn't a good fit, just like Blane. Duckie is the best friend who's hopelessly in love with Andie, and believes he deserves to be the object of her affection, since they've known each other for years. Blane is the rich boy who doesn't treat Andie the greatest throughout the movie, but still comes out on top by the end of it. Realistically, the amount of differences between the two would have their relationship barely reaching college.
