Summary
After 10 years of marriage, Jeff and Nealy Lang (Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks) have an idyllic suburban life, and a marriage that is stuck. That all changes on the day that Jeff decides to plant the perfect backyard, a home improvement project that almost instantly sets off a hysterical chain of events involving multiple infidelities, extortion, organ donation, and somebody ending up on the wrong side of a bow-and-arrow. Devilish throughout, The Details also stars Laura Linney in a stand-out performances as the Lang’s lonely neighbor, Lila. In the end, the film is both a love story and an existential horror story. The root of Jeff’s misdeeds after all, is that he wants to love his wife but no longer knows how. Filmmaker Jacob Aaron Estes plays with the notion that the smallest thing can unravel our lives. His narrative spontaneity and anarchic spirit allow characters to keep digging themselves into deeper moral holes to see if the universe will punish them. The result is a darkly funny meditation on marital malaise.
