Summary

Present day, Switzerland. In a private clinic, a girl endures complex facial reconstruction after being caught in a sweeping house fire in the south of France. Dazed with amnesia, she remembers nothing – even her own name. She is Micky (TUPPENCE MIDDLETON), a 20 year-old from London, orphaned after her parents died in a car crash. But even when family friend Julia (KERRY FOX) arrives, her past history remains a blur. Julia, personal assistant to Micky’s ailing relative, Aunt Elinor (FRANCES DE LA TOUR), who took Micky in after her parents died, takes her back to London. There she begins to piece together her shattered life, studying old photos in a desperate attempt to remember. She spies a picture of Do (ALEXANDRA ROACH), the childhood friend she spent her summers with in France, whilst living with her aunt. Learning from Julia that she is due to inherit her aunt’s entire estate on her 21st birthday, Micky soon encounters Jake (ANEURIN BARNARD), her former boyfriend, who now works for her aunt’s lawyer. After reigniting their passion, Jake reluctantly tells Micky that Do died in the same house fire that hospitalised her. Returning to her own flat, Micky finds Do’s suitcase. Inside is her diary, which she begins to read. The story flashes back to several months before the fire. Do is working in a bank when she spots Micky. She last saw Micky as a child, in France, but recognises her immediately. Now a photographer, Micky is delighted to see her – and the girls quickly spark up their old friendship. Do explains that after France, she went back to England with her mother. Micky asks about Do’s father and is shocked to discover he took his own life. Back in the present, Micky is pouring over Do’s writings when Julia arrives. She addresses her as Do. “It’s alright,” she adds. “You’re Micky now.” Shocked, confused, Micky runs out into the London night. She checks into a hotel, and is further taken aback when she realises she’s signed the registry book as Do. Returning to the past, Do is now living in Micky’s flat, and secretly writing to Elinor, informing her of Micky’s party-girl lifestyle. Tensions run high between Do and Jake, who despises her permanent presence, causing frequent arguments between all three. The dynamic changes again when Julia arrives, informing the girls that Elinor is ill, and wants to see both of them in France. She takes Do out for dinner, goading her that it can’t be easy living in Micky’s shadow. The next day, Micky entices Do to come to France. Upon arrival, they visit Elinor in hospital, who doesn’t have long to live. Returning to Elinor’s villa where they spent their childhood summers, as they sunbathe and swim it’s just like old times – though Do is acting strangely. She heads to the village bar, where she calls Julia, who tells her that, all those years ago, it was Micky who informed Do’s mother of an affair between Elinor and Do’s father. Playing on Do’s emotional vulnerability, Julia orchestrates a plot for Do to start a fire in the villa and kill Micky in a bid to gain access to her inheritance. That night, Micky takes off to a boat party, leaving Do behind. Resenting this, she gives thought to the plan – one that becomes even more urgent the next day when Julia arrives to inform them that Elinor has died. After another drunken evening, Do puts Micky to bed, and the plot into action. A fire rages through the villa; Micky is killed and Do bursts from the building, her face burnt beyond recognition. Back in the present, Do returns to the villa in France, appalled by what she’s done. There she meets Serge (STANLEY WEBER), a local bartender who informs her that he overheard the plot cooked up between her and Julia. He wants 100,000 Euros in return for his silence, having previously extracted money from Micky for telling her about the plot to kill her. Blessed with this knowledge, Micky saves herself on that fateful night. It is she, and not Do, who bursts from the window. It is Do, and not Micky, who dies in the fire. The realisation of who she really is dawns on Micky. Giving Serge the family’s sports car for payment, she returns to the villa. There she confronts Julia, who has already discovered that Elinor’s estate has been entirely left to Do – meaning her elaborate scheme has been for nothing. She and Julia fight in the swimming pool, before Micky cracks Julia’s head on the tiles and kills her. Micky leaves the villa and heads to the beach, where she swims out to sea. The next morning, she wakes up on the shore.
