With all this talk of Blu-ray and HD it is no surprise that downloading movies with equipment you already have is looking more and more appealing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Movielink and media software specialist Sonic Solutions are set to confirm today a licensing agreement that will make it possible for consumers to legally watch downloaded movies using a regular DVD player."

This "pioneering deal" seems to pave the way for digital movie distribution. However, even though it is "a joint venture of MGM Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and Warner Bros., Movielink does not yet have the necessary licenses to offer movies for this type of download, although discussions have begun."

Also, the usage rules and other rights management issues still need to be worked out.
