There's quite a variety of new titles coming to Prime Video this January, and most of them will be available as early as January 1st. While the only original Prime Video movie they'll be releasing in January in Shotgun Wedding, starring Jennifer Lopez, there is still a large amount of both classic and recent films that are being added to the streaming platform in January. These new releases have something for everyone, from nostalgic dramas to exciting adventures.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (Jan. 1)
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot follows Kim Barker (Tina Fey) as she tires of her cable news job and decides to take a journalism assignment in Kabul, Afghanistan, where she meets another maladjusted journalist, Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie). Together, the two navigate the differences between their cushy, boring, American lifestyle and the war zone they find themselves in all while dealing with warlords, the military, partying, and personal challenges.
Akeelah And The Bee (Jan. 1)
Akeelah and the Bee features a very young Keke Palmer (Akeelah) while she was coming up as the star she is today. This movie about a young girl from South LA with an aptitude for spelling also includes stars like Angela Basset and Laurence Fishburne, as young Akeelah spells her way to the National Spelling Bee. It's got a certain nostalgic quality to it that makes it a great movie to stream to start the New Year.
If Beale Street Could Talk (Jan. 1)
Based on the James Baldwin novel of the same title, If Beale Street Could Talk is a movie about racial injustice and wrongful imprisonment in 1970s Harlem. Despite the unfair nature of this story, Baldwin shows that love and hope can make awful situations a little bit more bearable. Starring Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Regina King, and Brian Tyree Henry, this impactful movie will finally be joining the Prime Video catalog.
Mission: Impossible (Jan. 1)
The Mission: Impossible franchise will now be joining Prime Video. While the two most recent installments of this saga are exclusive to Paramount+, Prime video will add Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible II, Mission: Impossible III, and Mission: Impossible IV – Ghost Protocol to its catalog. Fortunately, the action and thrills of those four Mission: Impossible are probably the best of the franchise, thanks to great directors like John Woo, Brian De Palma, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird.
Failure to Launch (Jan. 1)
Failure to Launch is a 2006 romantic comedy that's filled with stars like Matthew McConaughey, Bradley Cooper, and Kathy Bates, alongside many more. McConaughey plays Tripp, a handsome bum who lives with mom and dad and has no goals to leave the nest, but his parents have other plans. They hire Paula, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, to get Tripp to fall in love with her, help him grow up, and make him move out of the house. This movie has an early 2000s romantic comedy vibe that seemingly cannot be recreated by movies today.
Indiana Jones (Jan. 1)
All four Indiana Jones movies will be making their Prime Video debut assumedly in anticipation of the 2023 release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In order of release, the four Indiana Jones movies are Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This fifth movie is rumored to be Harrison Ford's final time suiting up as Indiana Jones.
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. (Jan. 3)
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. came out in September 2022 and has quickly become acclaimed for its compassionate yet funny satirical take on Christian megachurches. This quasi-mockumentary goes the distance with two of the best performances of the year. Trinitie Childs (Regina Hall) is a pastor's wife at a Southern Baptist megachurch alongside her husband, Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown).
The Childs' face a scandal and must temporarily close their megachurch, only to plan the biggest comeback since Jesus himself. This satirical comedy holds a mirror up to the megachurch industry with its two amazing leads, but is bolstered by an excellent supporting cast, including Nicole Beharie.
Jurassic World: Dominion (Jan. 6)
Jurassic World: Dominion will finally claw its way onto Prime Video. While the sixth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise felt like a good place to stop, Universal Pictures poked rumors that they are not ready to let dinosaurs be extinct quite yet. As with all Jurassic Park movies, it is exciting, full of action, and has a great cast, merging the original stars of the Jurassic Park movies with the newer cast of the Jurassic World part of the franchise.
Vengeance (Jan. 17)
Directed by and starring B.J. Novak of The Office, Vengeance follows a podcasting journalist who travels from New York City to Texas to find answers about the mysterious death of a woman he slept with. This dark comedy also stars Ashton Kutcher and sarcastically criticizes the true crime genre, podcasting, fame, and toxic masculinity.
Shotgun Wedding (Jan. 27)
Shotgun Wedding centers around Darcy (rom-com favorite Jennifer Lopez), Tom (Josh Duhamel), and their destination wedding gone wrong. The couple plans a destination wedding that is quickly put on hold when the entire wedding party is taken hostage. This movie has a star-studded cast featuring Jennifer Coolidge, Lenny Kravitz, and D'Arcy Carden. This wedding will not be one to miss.
Orphan: First Kill (Jan. 31)
Orphan: First Kill is a 2022 psychological horror film that has previously been available on Paramount+. Serving as a prequel to the 2009 film Orphan, this movie tells the story of a woman who escapes an Estonian psychiatric facility and travels to America to trick a rich family into thinking she is their missing daughter. It's a sad, dark, and magnetic horror film with an incredible performance from Isabelle Fuhrman.
