In 2007, audiences were treated to the hilarious yet moving, fish out of water tale of the all-singing, all-dancing Princess Giselle in Enchanted. This archetypal Disney Princess, played by Amy Adams in a performance that still remains one of her highlights to this day, found herself sucked out of her animated fairytale kingdom and dumped into the live action world of urban America. There, she learned a few hard truths, found love, and ultimately helped bring a little magic into the lives of some of its residents. The movie was somewhat of a surprise hit, earning a whopping $340.5 million at the box office and winning over fans and critics alike. Now, 15 years later, a sequel called Disenchanted is set to drop on Disney+ on November 18, and judging by the title and the trailer, Giselle’s life in Manhattan might not have been the "Happily Ever After" she had hoped for.

Enchanted is full of fantasy, humor, and heart, and sees Disney lightly poking fun at a lot of the fairy tale tropes they’d embraced in the past by changing the context and seeing how it would play out in the real world. While fans patiently wait for the sequel to be released, we’ve compiled the below list of movies that explore similar themes and share a similar tone that can be watched in the meantime.

6 Godmothered

Walt Disney Pictures

It’s hard to ignore certain similarities between Enchanted and Godmothered. Both are created by Disney, for starters, and both strive to showcase how a bit of magic in today’s mundane world can make all the difference. In the case of Godmothered, we see an inexperienced fairy godmother venture out into the big bad world to prove that there is still a need for fairy godmothers and their brand of magic. Audiences are treated to a movie that is equal parts moving and funny as she tracks down a grown woman whose childhood request for a fairy godmother was left unanswered and tries to win her over to the idea of letting her and her magic become a part of her life.

5 The Pagemaster

Colbath / Hanna-Barbera

A hugely underrated gem that went relatively unnoticed at the time, The Pagemaster is almost like a reverse Enchanted in that it sees a live-action Macaulay Culkin become animated as he’s sucked into a world of adventure, horror, and fantasy. For him, it takes place in a closed library he has managed to get into in order to avoid a storm. An intriguing premise that was made even better thanks to the presence of a great voice cast including Christopher Lloyd, Whoopi Goldberg, and Patrick Stewart.

4 Hook

A scene from Spielberg's Peter Pan adaptation, Hook (1991)
Amblin Entertainment

Like The Pagemaster, Hook starts with a fish out of water that is almost a reverse to Enchanted. Hook is about the beloved Peter Pan, only now he is an adult, played by Robin Williams, who has grown up in the real world and his memories of Neverland have completely faded. Now a father, Pan finds himself once again in the magical kingdom as he has to find the magic in himself once again in order to rescue his children who have been kidnapped by the villainous Captain Hook. While the critics weren’t too fond of the flick at its time of release, it has since gone onto to amass a strong cult following and is often considered a Robin Williams classic.

3 Shrek

DreamWorks Pictures

Like the Enchanted franchise, Shrek lightly pokes fun at fairy-tale lore and is happy to play with the associated tropes and conventions. Like Enchanted, it also appeals to adults and children alike, cleverly blending playful characters and fairy-tale tropes with some hidden mature humor and parodies thrown in for the adults. The animation is beautiful, and the voice cast is stellar; unsurprisingly, it became a huge international hit, spawning multiple sequels and spinoffs.

2 Freaky Friday (2003)

Freaky Friday
Walt Disney Pictures

This remake of the classic 1976 movie starring Jodie Foster, which itself is an adaptation of Mary Rodgers's 1972 novel of the same name, wowed critics and audiences across the globe, scoring a highly respectable 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Freaky Friday stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, in her prime, as a mother and daughter, respectively, whose bodies are magically switched as a result of a mysterious Chinese fortune cookie. While body swap movies are nothing new, this one stands out in that it finds a perfect blend of humor and heart which is heightened by the fantastic performances of its two leads.

1 Stardust

Paramount Pictures

Fans of the more fantasy side of the Enchanted franchise are in for a treat with Stardust. The movie follows Charlie Cox as he plays a young man on a perilous adventure to save the magical land of Stormhold. Taken from the imagination of Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess, who created the illustrated story from which the movie was adapted, director Matthew Vaughn creates a world full of beautiful imagery and a plethora of weird, wonderful, and whacky characters. Featuring one of the greatest casts ever assembled including Claire Danes, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais, Jason Flemyng, Rupert Everett, Peter O'Toole, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ian McKellen, it’s perhaps Robert De Niro, though, who steals the show with his portrayal of the cutthroat pirate torn between his persona as the bloodthirsty captain of his flying pirate ship and his secret passion for theater, dance, and the arts.
