Awards season is in full swing, and that brings what is considered the most prestigious awards in film: the Oscars. The Oscars have been awarding the best in movies since 1927, and continue to give lauded awards like Best Picture. While the Oscars honor excellence, the Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, honor film inferiority. Since 1981, the Razzies have given awards to the worst in film, including Worst Picture and Worst Actress, but also fun categories like Worst Screen Couple. With such a clear divide between the awards, it might seem impossible for a movie to receive both an Oscar nomination and a Razzie nomination. However, it’s actually happened several times. Here are nine movies that have been nominated for an Oscar and a Razzie.

9 The Godfather Part III (1990)

Paramount Pictures

The Godfather and The Godfather Part II are both considered some of the best movies of all-time. The same cannot be said of The Godfather Part III, which concludes the story of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). Released 16 years after the second movie, it received average reviews, and was seen as weak compared to the other movies. Most reviews targeted the plot and the performance from Sofia Coppola, who was cast as Michael’s daughter after several actors fell through. Coppola won Worst Supporting Actress and Worst New Star at the Razzies, while the movie earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.

8 Wall Street (1987)

Wall Street stars Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko, a ruthless corporate raider who embodies ambition in the Wall Street scene. Douglas earned praise for his performance, and would go on to win Best Actor at the Oscars. However, his co-star, Darryl Hannah, received the opposite; she got more negative reviews and would go on to win Worst Supporting Actress at the Razzies. It’s one of the only movies to not only have nominations for both awards, but to win both awards.

7 Blonde (2022)

Netflix

Blonde joins a series of biopics about iconic actress Marilyn Monroe. This version stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn, delving into the dark parts of her life. The movie was criticized for how it often dishonors its subject, and received many nominations at the upcoming Razzies. These range from Worst Picture and Worst Director to two nominations in Worst Screen Couple, including director “Andrew Dominik’s Issues with Women” – likely in response to criticisms that the movie exploits Monroe and adds unnecessary trauma, per Refinery 29. De Armas, however, received praise and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

6 Joker (2019)

The Joker - Joker (2019)
Warner Bros.

Joker tells the origin story of the famous Batman villain, with Joaquin Phoenix joining the ranks of Joker actors who are known for giving intense, dedicated performances. The movie received several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, while Phoenix would win the Oscar for Best Actor. Yet his over-the-top performance in a gratuitously violent movie received a Razzie nomination for Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Property.

Suicide Squad features a group of villains put into a team to serve on dangerous missions. Including characters like the Joker and Harley Quinn, the movie was a financial success but negatively received. Despite this, it did win an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. On the other hand, it received two Razzie nominations for Worst Screenplay and Worst Supporting Actor for Jared Leto’s criticized portrayal of the Joker. A sequel to the movie, The Suicide Sqaud, would release in 2021 to better reviews.

4 Batman Forever (1995)

Batman Forever marks the debut of Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman, who must contend with Two-Face and the Riddler. Despite the negative reviews for its campy presentation upon release, it has since grown a bit in estimation, with praise for its casting and distinct visual style. That style earned it an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. However, its song, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me,” by U2 received a Razzie nomination for Worst Song.

3 Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

20th Century Fox

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was the first major Star Wars movie in over 15 years when it was released. However, this long-awaited prequel, which tells of Anakin Skywalker’s rise from young boy to Darth Vader, didn’t do well critically; it was even considered one of the worst Star Wars movies by Den of Geek. The film received Oscar nominations for its sound and visual effects, and would win in the latter category. However, it also received nearly every possible Razzie nomination, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screen Couple.

2 The Bodyguard (1992)

Warner Bros.

The Bodyguard stars Kevin Costner as Frank, bodyguard to singer Rachel, played by Whitney Houston. Their romance unfolds as the intensity of attacks on Rachel grows. It was a financial hit but received mostly negative reviews. The movie is probably best known for its music, which includes Houston's version of “I Will Always Love You.” Houston was nominated twice for Best Song at the Oscars, for “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You.” Yet at the Razzies, the movie earned several nominations, including Worst Picture; Worst Actress and Worst New Star for Houston; and Worst Actor for Costner.

1 Elvis (2022)

Warner Bros. Pictures

The recent biopic, Elvis, stars Austin Butler as renowned singer Elvis Presley. While the movie itself got mixed reviews, Butler was highly praised for his dedicated performance. Butler won a Golden Globe, and has been nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. Tom Hanks, as Elvis’s scheming manager, Colonel Tom Parker, did not fare as well. He is nominated for Worst Supporting Actor at the upcoming Razzies, and also has a surprising nomination in the Worst Screen Couple category, for “His Latex-Laden Face (and Ludicrous Accent).”
