Many of Hollywood's biggest names start off as struggling artists. It can take years, decades even, to land that big break. But with enough talent, time, and luck (because yes, that is a factor), they nab that one movie that launches their career to the next level.

It's fun to go back and watch the films that gave our favorite stars their big break, long before they were ever household names. Seeing them as fresh-faced youths trying to leave their mark, oblivious to the illustrious careers ahead of them, adds another layer of entertainment. Most times, a film catapults the career of a single person. But every now and then, multiple stars are forged by the same movie--not only actors and actresses but writers and directors as well. At the time of their release, these films featured mostly up-and-coming names, but as we look back on these movies today, we see only an ensemble of all-stars. Here are ten films that launched multiple careers at once.

1 The Godfather (1972)

Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and John Cazale in The Godfather 1972
Paramount Pictures

Since its release in 1972, Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather has been regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Based on Mario Puzo's novel, it tells the story of the prominent Corleone crime family. The Godfather is known for many things: famous scenes, quotable lines, and of course, its all-star cast. At the time, only Marlon Brando, who played the iconic Vito Corleone, was famous. Everyone else was just starting out. Studio heads wanted someone well-known to play the role of Michael Corleone and were annoyed when Coppola cast Al Pacino -- although they didn't stay annoyed for long. Pacino's performance received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination and paved the way for him to become one of Hollywood's greatest actors.

The Godfather was also Diane Keaton's first major film role and made her a leading lady. Although they had mid-sized roles in previous films, James Caan and Robert Duvall both saw their first critical success with The Godfather. It was also the film debut for John Cazale, whose next four films would all be Oscar nominees. If not for Cazale's untimely death, he may very well have joined co-stars Pacino and Robert De Niro as one of Hollywood's greatest actors.
