Apple TV+ has been and continues to release some excellent series in May, and they've been putting out some interesting (and Oscar-winning) films as well. They are quickly making their mark in the streaming market, where the balance of power is forever changing. While fans have enjoyed services like Netflix and Hulu, which have dominated the streaming apps for years, fans are growing weary of the quantity vs quality that they have grown to provide. Netflix especially has some fans fleeing and switching to other apps in the last few months, as they announced to raise their prices and change several of their policies yet again, and have lost 200,000 subscribers since the start of 2022.

As many of the streaming giants continue to focus on competing with one another, Apple TV+ is continuing to focus on what really matters: quality content. Customers are no longer interested in how much content a streaming app has, as long as the content is enjoyable and of high quality, and Apple TV+ is certainly delivering that in spades. With a great lineup of new shows and movies already on or coming to the app this year, it is certain to be another stellar year for them. These are some of the best movies that are going to be on the streaming service in May, and what viewers can look forward to with each one.

CODA has won three Oscars among other accolades, massively boosting Apple TV+ subscriptions. The coming-of-age story of a girl with deaf parents is the English remake of La Famille Bélier, a French-Belgian movie from 2014. As the girl juggles saving the family business with her goal of becoming a singer, the comedy-drama has gotten mostly positive reviews upon release. It is a film that will make viewers laugh and cry throughout the movie, and though it's not new (as Apple TV+ isn't releasing too many new titles in May), it's completely deserving of a first or even second viewing.

Perhaps one of the most underrated movies on this list, Hala follows a teenage Muslim girl as she tries to navigate a life that balances her desires and the expectations set upon her by her family and religion. As she tests the boundaries of her sexuality and family bonds, she uncovers a secret about her parents that threatens to tear her family apart. One of the oldest movies on this list, but perfect for Mother's Day, is The Elephant Queen, a documentary about a family of elephants and their journey to find a new home. This inspirational film, showing the hardships that animals face in the face of drought, follows the herd's matriarch, Athena, as she leads her family across the Savannah to a new watering hole. Narrated by the actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, this tale of love and loss is shown beautifully on screen, depicting the lengths that mothers will go to provide for their young.
