The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

    • Adventure

Terry Gilliam is reviving his passion project "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" nearly a decade after his first attempt was derailed by bad weather, destroyed sets and lead actor Jean Rochefort's back problems.

The new film will revolve around a filmmaker who is charmed into joining Don Quixote's eternal quest for his ladylove, becoming an unwitting Sancho Panza.

Gilliam and screenwriter Tony Grisoni, who also wrote the first version, have rewritten and updated the script.

"Battle Angel" is based on the Japanese Manga series of graphic novels by Yukito Kishiro. The movie combines the first three books, Ido, Alita, and Hugo.

Set in the 26th century, the story takes place 300 years after a societal collapse caused by a major war. But in that society, it's a technological dark age following a pinnacle of achievement far, far beyond where we are right now. It's a post-apocalyptic world from a very high level with cyborg technology as just a way of life. People are augmented a lot as workers and so on, so being a cyborg is not unusual.

The main character is a cyborg. She has an organic human brain, and she looks like she's about fourteen years old. She has a completely artificial body and she's lost her memory - she's found in a wreckage and she's reconstituted by a cyber-surgeon who becomes her surrogate father.

Follows an ice princess who emerged from a poor upbringing and rough childhood in Portland, OR to rise to the top of the sport of figure skating with a ferocious determination and athleticism that allowed her to become the first American woman to complete the triple axel in major competitions. That propelled her to victory in the 1991 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and second in the World Championships.

She was expected to battle Nancy Kerrigan for gold in the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer. Of course, Harding is mostly known for the infamy that occurred when her husband, Jeff Gillooly, and a couple of hired thugs tried to incapacitate Kerrigan by breaking her leg. They merely bruised Kerrigan, got caught, and Gillooly turned against his wife as he tried to stay out of jail.
