24: Season 6
This show has been a phenomenal success and I'm sure this latest season of the hit Kiefer Sutherland show will be a welcomed gift for almost any member of the family. Also, if you're in a splurging mood, you can pick up the first six seasons in one set. 24: Season 6 and the Seasons 1-6 set will be released on December 4.
X-Files: The Complete Collector's Edition
For those of you who thought that a 42-disc set wasn't enough... This set covers all nine seasons and 201 episodes of the hit sci-fi show on 61 discs! There are a lot of people who don't have that many discs in their entire collection, let alone in one set. Anyway, in addition to the complete TV series, this set also includes the The X-Files movie and the Mythology Threads featurettes. For all the dads who couldn't get enough of Mulder and Scully, this is the perfect gift. X-Files: The Complete Collector's Edition is available now.
Seinfeld: The Complete Series
If the Seinfeld: The Complete Ninth Season DVD isn't enough for the Seinfeld fan on your list, you can break out the big bucks for Seinfeld: The Complete Series. This 33-disc set offers every episode from the hit sitcom's nine-season run and includes a Roundtable with the cast and co-creator Larry David in bonus features. This huge set will be a great gift for any Seinfeld fan. Seinfeld: The Complete Series is available now.
Entourage: Season Three Part 2
Who doesn't want an Entourage? This two-disc set caps off this hit HBO series' third season and will give you your fix of this popular show while you wait for Season 4 to hit the DVD shelves and Season 5 to air on HBO. This was the first season to break in to the full-season format, and this set has the final eight episodes of this season and this should be a fine present for any Entourage fan on your list.
The O.C.: The Complete Series Collection
Here's one of those big huge complete series set for the youngster on your list. This 28-disc set features all 92 episodes from the four-season run of this popular Fox program and it comes in this nifty ocean-colored packaging. It doesn't look like it'll be a fit on your DVD shelving unit (like most of these complete series sets...), but you can be sure this will be a fine fit for any teenager on your list.
Rocky: The Complete Saga Collection
When it comes to dude movies, you really can't go wrong with a dose of the Italian Stallion... or a BIG dose in this case. This set gives us all six Rocky films packaged together in a big black box. It's a great gift for the brother that only has a few films in the series, or a brother who needs to be introduced to the series... or the brother that just likes a nice boxed set for Christmas. Either way, it's a fine holiday gift for that older brother on your list. Rocky: The Complete Saga Collection comes to DVD on December 4.
The Jason Bourne Collection
This action-packed set offers everything a growing boy would love in a DVD set (Don't worry, moms. All three movies are PG-13). This collection offers all three movies, TheBourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum along with a fourth disc of bonus material all packaged in a limited edition Safe Deposit Gift Box. Or, if the young lad already has the first two DVD's, you can just pick him up the The Bourne Ultimatum disc to complete his collection. Both The Bourne Ultimatum and The Jason Bourne Collection will be released on December 11.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter is a phenomena in both books and movies unlike anything we've ever seen. This widely-popular series is enjoyed by practically every age group there is, and this fifth movie on DVD will be a very popular disc this holiday season. There are probably a lot of spaces cleared on a lot of shelves for this DVD of Year 5, and it would make a great gift for almost anyone in your family. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released on December 11.
Finally, what are the holidays without a little McLovin. Yeah, I know. This is a teen-ish comedy, but it's so hilarious and so authentic that I think almost anyone would find this funny. I'm sure it'd be lost on the grandpas and grandmas, and probably some of the moms or dads... but anyone from their mid-30s on down would likely get a kick out of this raucous comedy. Maybe this movie that bridges the gap between parent and younger, semi-rebellious child. Maybe they can watch this movie together and learn a thing or two, and laugh their heads off. Maybe... it's a stretch, but I just had to have this in my holiday guide, one way or another! Long live McLovin!
Christmas Time in South Park
Well, Mom might not be so thrilled about this gift, but you can bet your little brother or nephew will. This disc contains seven of the long-running series' best Christmas-themed episodes including Mr. Hankey's debut and Christmas in Iraq. Now, I'm not advocating this present if your little brother or nephew is 6, or something like that. I'm banking on a modicum of common sense here. But if you have a teenage nephew or younger brother, you can bet this will be a great gift for him. Christmas Time in South Park is available now.
Lets face it. It did win 11 Oscars and set the all-time domestic box office record... but this is the ultimate chick flick. Sure, odds are this title might already be in your older sister's collection, but this 10th Anniversary edition, two-disc set offers some new special features and will surely make a great gift for your big sis. Also, if you need a stocking stuff for that girlfriend of yours, you can't go wrong here either. Titanic will sails into stores on November 20.
The Best of the Colbert Report
You might not know what truthiness is (even though it was the Word of the Year. Seriously.), but any brother in his 20s or 30s likely would. This DVD showcases some of the best moments from The Daily Show spin-off with Stephen Colbert in this popular show's run. This show is huge with the twentysomething dude crowd, so this would be a great gift for the older bro in your family.
James Bond Monster Box
If you like to splurge on your pops for Christmas, then look no further for your splurging needs. This massive 42-disc boxed set includes all 21 Bond films AND an extra 21 discs of bonus features to complement each movie. You can give your dad the entire collection of James Bond on film in this enormous boxed set. It might take him until next Christmas to finish watching this mammoth set, but it still will make a great (but spendy) gift for your old man. James Bond Monster Box is available now.
Miami Vice: The Complete Series
Twenty years ago, your dad probably wanted to be some version of Crockett or Tubbs. Who wouldn't want to live Miami, wear those fancy white suits and chase bad guys for a living? This is a great gift for dads to revisit one of the best crime dramas from the 80s, maybe ever. This 27-disc set features every episode from the show's five-season run, and a few bonus features as well. Sadly, a white sport coat isn't included with this set, but this is another great gift set for the dads.
I'm adding another one for the dads solely because the first three were quite spendy, and I figured we needed a cheaper gift for those shoppers on a budget, and this one is a match for the dads. This 1995 Best Picture winner also happens to be an action-packed, war spectacle that most dads would surely appreciate. This two-disc special collectors edition also offers a host of new special features which all adds up to one long, full day of viewing pleasure. Braveheart will hit the DVD shelves on December 18, which also makes it perfect for those last-second shoppers as well.
What mom didn't/doesn't love Elvis? This new four-disc set goes back to The King's glory years, and mom can watch it over and over again on DVD. I can't find any specifics about what is actually on these four discs, but I'm sure details on this release will be available soon, but if your mom loves her some Elvis, I'm sure you can't go wrong with this gift. Elvis Collection hits the shelves on November 27.
It's a Wonderful Life
If your mom is like mine, she has a tendency to snatch up as many quality Christmas movies as she can find. If your mom is like mine, she probably already has an older version of this title in her collection, gathering dust for 11 months out of the year. I'm sure any mom would love an updated version of this Christmas classic under the tree this year. This new two-disc set of the Frank Capra classic, staring Jimmy Stewart, would surely be a welcomed gift for any mom.
Deck the Halls
Since your mom loves her some Christmas movies, this recent Christmas flick would make a great gift for her as well. This Danny DeVito/Matthew Broderick family comedy has a little something for the whole family to enjoy, and a nice, modern story about the craziness of the holiday season. It's a pretty fun flick that your mom would enjoy in her collection. Deck the Halls is available now.
Northern Exposure: The Complete Series
I added another one for mom too, because I didn't want her to feel left out when you bought one of the big fat gift sets for dad. This one is right up her alley though, with the complete series of this quaint little hit show that gave us a glimpse into Alaskan life. This set contains all six seasons of the show on 26 discs and it's all housed in some rather unique packaging. All of these discs come in a suede messenger bag! So you can hook mom up with the complete series and get her a new bag to boot. Two birds with one purchase/stone! Northern Exposure: The Complete Series is in stores now.
The Coen Brothers Gift Set
This is a wonderful gift set for someone who's just a rookie film buff, or for a film buff who, for whatever reason, doesn't own these marvelous early films of the Coen Brothers. The five-disc set includes their first four films: Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink along with their breakthrough smash hit, Fargo. I'm not sure why they skipped over The Hudsucker Proxy, but oh well. This is a fantastic gift for any film buff, young or old. The Coen Brothers Gift Set is in stores now.
This futuristic sci-fi classic gets a fat special edition treatment this holiday season. They have a bunch of different formats here, with a two-disc version, a four-disc version and even a five-disc version that comes in a replica version of Harrison Ford's briefcase from the film. The five disc version seems to be the way to go, because it includes a bunch of other goodies, including a signed letter from director Ridley Scott, some other miniature replicas, and the extra disc contains the rare workprint version of the film. The five-disc edition will be rather limited, though, so you better get your hands on them quick-like. The four-disc version will suffice as well, with plenty of cool features including a three-hour documentary about the film. Any film buff would be happy to unwrap this big set on Christmas day. Blade Runner comes to DVD on December 18.
The Usual Suspects
This is a marvelous movie that every movie freak should have in his/her collection. I'm still a bit salty that this wasn't included in the new AFI 100 Films list again, but I digress. We get an outstanding cast, an Oscar-winning script from Christopher McQuarrie and the breakthrough film for director Bryan Singer. It's a masterful crime drama with one of the best endings of all-time, and your family cinefile will surely give you props for this gift. The Usual Suspects, in this new special edition, comes to DVD on November 28.
Seinfeld: The Complete Ninth Season
This is the last season of the hugely popular sitcom, and it's here just in time to give it to anyone in your family on DVD. This four-disc set includes all 24 episodes of this season and includes over 13 hours of bonus material as well. Also, the big spenders can plunk down a lot more cash for Seinfeld: The Complete Series, which features all nine seasons in one set. Both of these DVD sets are available now.
This was a surprise hit in the theaters and the whole treasure-hunting genre, if you will, has been a resurgent one, as of late. This release is a new two-disc special edition affair, in correlation to the theatrical sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, due in theaters December 21. In standard fashion, this special edition hits the shelves on December 18, and would make a great, last-minute-ish present.
The Song Remains the Same
Led Zeppelin's music remains just as popular today then when they were still together, so I believe this set belongs in here. This Zep documentary is available in a deluxe edition or a collectors edition, both two-disc sets but the collectors edition has different packaging. You could pick this up for any music lover in your family, and it would make a great holiday gift.
Bratz: The Movie
The word on the street is that this is another popular series with the girls as well, and their first theatrical movie on DVD should be a popular buy also. This live-action version of the animated series and fashion dolls follows a group of four friends who form their own clique in an overly-cliquey school, and this would be another great gift for the niece or younger sister in your family. Bratz: The Movie will be released on DVD on November 27.
High School Musical 2
The younger girls in the family are always hard to shop for. Who can keep up with all the silly fads and trends these days? Certainly not me, but, word on the street is that this is quite popular among the younglings. While you might not know Zac Efron from Enron, you can bet that this will be a popular gift for all the young girls in your family. High School Musical 2 hits the DVD shelves on December 11.
