As has been proven a number of times now, even those Marvel projects that seem to start out all light and airy don’t maintain their joy all the way through. After the likes of WandaVision saw a dramatic turn towards the end of the series, it looks like Ms. Marvel will be going the same way according to recent comments by directors Adil El Arbi and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. While the opening of Marvel Studios’ new Disney+ show has seen a light-hearted and fun tone, fans should prepare themselves for some more “Marvel-esque” action and darkness to come. Speaking to The Direct, the directors explained that the journey of Kamala Khan will not be all fun for the young heroine.

Iman Vellani’s debut as Ms. Marvel is one that has been on the cards from some time, and as the 16-year-old Kamala Khan, the young actress has already made a huge impact with the first episode of the show seeing Ms. Marvel become the highest rated MCU show to hit Disney+ so far. Whether it will retain the rating as the show progresses is something that we can only wait and see, but with things about to get darker, it could either enhance or detract from what has been a solid start for the newcomer. Director El Arbi explained about the darker things coming to the series.

"Well, [later] episodes are gonna be a little bit darker. The stakes are gonna get higher.”

Co-director Obaid-Chinoy, who was responsible for directing some of the later episodes of the series added:

"I think that in searching [for] her identity, Kamala Khan is going to go on this journey to reconnect with her family to understand why it's so important for her to tell her own story and to craft that story, and to feel that she could be that superhero she always wanted to be, except that it would be her being the superhero as opposed to emulating someone else. And on that journey of discovery, we as an audience are going to go on what I can safely say is gonna be the thrill of our lives."

Ms. Marvel Will Lead Kamala Khan Directly To The Marvels

Captain Marvel 2 Synopsis Brings The Marvels Together for One Cosmic Adventure

Like most MCU shows, Ms. Marvel has a greater purpose and that is to introduce a new character in a long-form way before she progresses into the big screen side of the MCU. We already know that Khan will join Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) in The Marvels next summer, and the series is expected to leave the youngster on the verge of that movie.

Of course, it is also believed that the upcoming Secret Invasion series will also have a direct link to The Marvels, and delays in that series’ production are thought, in part, to be the reason why The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have been swapped in the MCU running order, with former now landing in the summer rather than the spring of 2023. Exactly where Ms. Marvel leaves its title character is something we still have a few weeks to wait to find out, and by that time we will also be closer to potentially finding out more of Marvel’s future plans at their panel at September’s Disney Expo.
