Way back in 2013, Universal Pictures announced a new monster universe, with the studio teaming up with Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan to build a shared universe around their iconic horror characters. The Mummy reboot will be the first full-fledged adventure developed under this universe, although the post-credits scene for Dracula Untold established Luke Evans' title character will be part of this universe as well. Today we have new details from writer Jon Spaihts, who teases that this Mummy movie will be like nothing that has come before it.

While Jon Spaihts might not be a household name, he is having quite the stellar year, writing the scripts for Doctor Strange and the upcoming sci-fi thriller Passengers, starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. The writer came aboard to write The Mummy reboot soon after the shared universe was announced, and he revealed in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter that his story will be the first in franchise history that will be legitimately scary, when asked what Doctor Strange fans should look forward to in The Mummy.

"I think a similar desire to legitimately explore the frightening and the cosmic. In The Mummy, I think we're going to see the first Mummy film in the entire Universal canon with the true power to terrify. The earliest [Boris] Karloff and Bela Lugosi Mummy movies were scary in a small way, perhaps a dated way. They were almost parlor movies. Subsequent movies have been more swashbuckling. This one is going to have all of that action and adventure, but a legitimate power to terrify. I think that's going to be the new experience of that film."

This film will represent another first in this storied franchise, with Sofia Boutella becoming the first ever female Mummy. The cast is lead by Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, with a supporting cast that also includes Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson. Universal has set a June 9, 2017 release date, putting it up against Paramount's upcoming sequel World War Z 2.

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. Universal hasn't announced when the first trailer for The Mummy will arrive quite yet.
