Mystery Men 2 happening is not outside the realm of possibility, as one of the comedy superhero film's stars says he has a good idea in mind for a follow-up film. Released in 1999 by director Kinka Usher and writer Neil Cuthbert, the movie follows a team of low-grade superheroes banding together to use their less-than-stellar superheroes in order to save the day. Its ensemble cast included Ben Stiller as Mr. Furious, Hank Azaria as Blue Raja, William H. Macy as The Shoveler, Paul Reubens as Spleen, Janeane Garofalo as The Bowler, Wes Studi as The Sphinx, Tom Waits as Doc Heller, and Kel Mitchell as Invisible Boy.

Mystery Men was a big budget film, costing nearly $70 million (or around $125 million in today's money) to produce. It wound up bombing at the bo office, making less than $34 million worldwide. Reviews were mixed at the time, though the film has developed more of a cult following over the past two decades, especially as the superhero genre has only immensely expanded since then. Whether that will lead to Mystery Men 2 getting greenlit is anyone's guess, but one star of the film is actively trying to make that happen.

Kel Mitchell was present at '90s Con this past weekend for an All That reunion panel. He spoke with ComicBook.com at the event and touched on the subject of Mystery Men. After praising some of his co-stars from that movie, Mitchell reveals he's got a pitch in mind for a sequel that he's planning to soon run by Ben Stiller to see if they can get the ball rolling on the project. He also teases that it would be an "origin story," as Mitchell explains:

"Shout out to Mystery Men. Shout out to Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo. Such a great film. I want it [Mystery Men 2]. I've asked Hank Azaria about it. I've got a fun idea for that one, too. We're gonna be talking to Ben about that... Let's just say 'origin story.' You know, we were the first superhero team-up before The Avengers and all those [superhero movies] started doing that."

Ben Stiller has also addressed the possibility of making a sequel. Last year, he similarly spoke with ComicBook.com about the idea. While he said he wasn't aware of any rumors or fan demands at the time about Mystery Men 2 happening, he noted that he'd be game to get involved with that, praising how fun that film was to make with his co-stars. As Stiller said:

“That's the first I'm hearing of it, but sure. I'm all for it. I had fun doing it... Yeah, it would be a blast. It was a really, really fun cast. And there's still some rage and fury inside me somewhere, I think.”

Time will have to tell if there's more Mystery Men to come. For now, you can revisit the original film by streaming it on Peacock.
