Fifteen years later, we're finally getting a sequel to Napoleon Dynamite. It may not be in the form of a movie or a TV series, but IDW Publishing has stepped up to deliver a follow-up to the beloved cult classic with a brand new comic book series set to hit shelves this fall. This four-issue series will pick up shortly after the events of the 2004 movie, marking the return of Napoleon, Deb and Pedro to the pop culture landscape.

IDW made the announcement today that the Napoleon Dynamite comic will arrive in September. The book comes from writers Carlos Guzman-Verdugo and Alejandro Verdugo (Time Cheetah), with art by Jorge Monlongo (Adventure Time). Sara Richard (My Little Pony) contributed the cover art for the debut issue. Carlos Guzman-Verdugo had this to say about the upcoming book.

"Napoleon Dynamite is a pop-culture staple, that spoke to the weirdo in all of us. It's an honor to have the chance to expand on the lives of Napoleon, Deb, and Pedro, characters that continue to resonate to this day. I still see people wearing 'Vote for Pedro' t-shirts! With this new story, we're focusing on matching the movie's unique tone, finding that perfect blend of oddball comedy and charming slice-of-life drama. It's certainly been a challenge but one we're sure will pay off for long-time fans. And the best part: we get to rewatch a lot of Napoleon Dynamite!"

The story for the comic book centers on Napoleon's best friend Pedro, who is now the student body president. However, the good times may prove to be short-lived after a fellow student accuses Pedro of cheating in order to win the election. It's up to Napoleon and Deb to use their skills to clear their friend before the principal can Impeach Pedro. The cover sees the iconic "Vote For Pedro" shirt with the first two words crossed out, so it now reads "Impeach Pedro," in line with the book's plot. Editor Tom Waltz had this to say in a statement.

"Fifteen years ago, an unsuspecting world was introduced to the bizarre cinematic world of Napoleon Dynamite... and it was flippin' sweet! And now we have the freakin' awesome opportunity to show off our really good comic-book-making skills with a tale that picks up right where Napoleon and his friends left off. It's almost like we borrowed Uncle Rico's mail-order time machine... and it actually worked this time!"

Napoleon Dynamite, directed by Jared Hess, was originally released in 2004. Headlined by Jon Heder as the titular character, the movie had a tiny budget of just $400,000. Despite that, it went on to become a huge hit, grossing $46 million at the global box office. It's since gone on to achieve cult status.

The first issue of the series will be available with two variant covers; a Photo Edition and a Jorge Monlongo "Swords and Sorcery and Sci-Fi and Skills" edition. Napoleon Dynamite #1 is set to hit shelves in September. Be sure to check out Sara Richard's cover art for the first issue from IDW below.
