The transition from the big screen to a streaming series on Disney+ didn't work out so well for National Treasure. After Nicolas Cage led two films in the movie series, the franchise was revived with National Treasure: Edge of History, a 10-episode series that wrapped up its first season on Disney+ in February. Its future had since been unclear until recently when it was reported that the show had been axed with no plans to develop a second season.

Lisette Olivera, who led the cast of the National Treasure series, has broken her silence on the cancelation. In her Instagram Stories, Olivera re-shared video footage of her giving a speech to fellow cast and crew from the final day of shooting on the set. The footage was shared by crew member Shannon Godly, who wanted to get the video out there in light of the cancelation news.

"Here is the beautiful speech [Lisette Olivera] gave at S1 wrap," Godly wrote. "She is a living embodiemtn of what a privilege it was to work with this cast & Crew. Lisette you are effortlessly classy, wise and kind."

With her re-share of the video, Lisette also wrote back, "I still mean every word!! I'm still so, so grateful and [Shannon Godly] YOU ARE THE FRIGGIN BEST."

Olivera followed this up by sharing more behind-the-scenes images of the shoot to her Instagram Stories. Clearly, she seems to just be happy that the first and only season happened rather than dwelling on the show ending with just a single season.

National Treasure: Edge of History primarily followed new characters, but it was set in the same world as the feature films. It included special appearances from Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha, both playing the roles they played in the National Treasure movies. The series also starred Olivera, Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Lyndon Smith.

It's hard to say if the show bombing will kill the momentum the franchise would need to secure a third movie installment, potentially with Nicolas Cage reprising his role. For what it's worth, there is apparently a screenplay that is waiting in the wings. Justin Bartha teased as much when asked about National Treasure 3.

"There is a script. That's all I'll say," he said. "There have been a few different scripts, actually, but the one thing that has to happen is for all the stars to align."
