National Treasure: Edge of History has become the latest member of the one-season club as Disney pulled the plug on the adventure show following its less than spectacular performance on Disney+. Acting as a sequel to the Nicolas Cage movie franchise, the ten-episode series immediately faced an uphill struggle by not involving Cage and instead seeing Lisette Olivera taking the lead, with only Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha being present as a thin connection to the films.

As reported by Deadline, the Disney Branded Television extension of the National Treasure franchise has failed to gain a second season renewal, something that is becoming commonplace among streaming series. National Treasure: Edge of History was immediately hit with negative reviews similar to other recent reboot shows such as Willow, which slammed the casting, writing and pretty much everything else about the series.

This means that National Treasure has joined the likes of Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, Mysterious Benedict Society and The Mighty Ducks: Game Changes as a new show that only survived one or two seasons before being given the chop. Just like the rest of these, and other series across many streaming platforms that are axed “before their time,” National Treasure did have its fans, but just not enough for Disney to risk more money on a show that was unlikely to deliver impressive returns.

Since National Treasure: Book of Secrets debuted in 2007, fans have wanted to know when Nicolas Cage would be returning to the franchise for a third movie. While it seemed that National Treasure 3 was being planned but never made it to production. However, Cage’s recent run of popular movies has seen questions being asked whether there is a chance that the era of the legacy sequel could usher in the belated follow up.

Back in December, the future of the National Treasure franchise looked to be bright, with the TV series heading to Disney+ and original producer Jerry Bruckheimer suggesting that wheels were in motion for National Treasure 3. He told E! News:

"We said we'd like to make another National Treasure and they said, 'Sure, let's come up with a new cast.' At the same time, we were developing National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage—which we still are. So, that's ongoing."

Another report around the same time suggested that the script for National Treasure 3 had already been written and in the process of being sent to Cage to read. Since then, there has been little in the way of updates on this progress. With the TV series having failed to capture interest on Disney+, the biggest question is whether this is all down to Nicolas Cage not being present, or whether National Treasure is just a franchise that has already run its course and should be left buried in the past.

For those who still want to see whether National Treasure: Edge of History deserved to be a one-season wonder, the whole series is streaming on Disney+.
