National Treasure: Edge of History has wrapped filming and is in the final stages of post-production. The show is already making headlines, for it will continue the fan-favorite franchise after fifteen years of the last film’s release. The series features an all-new cast of young treasure hunters who seek off a Pan-American adventure. But along with these new members, the show will also feature Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel reprising their roles from the films. Their presence solidifies the series’ connection to the movies and marks a continuation of the story arc left in National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

In a recent interview with Collider, showrunners Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Wibberley revealed that these two weren’t the only ones to make appearances in the show. In order to excite the series, the showrunners wished for Nicolas Cage to appear in a cameo in series. Talking about Nic Cage’s possible cameo in the show, Marianne said,

The dream is absolutely [there]. You know, we wanted him to be featured in an episode this season, but his schedule just didn’t work out. So we’ll still try to get him featured in an episode if we get a second season. We’re all about Nic Cage. We love him, and we want him, in the very least, in a cameo.

In the same interview, the cast revealed that the fans would be able to notice derived elements from the series’ second film. Edge of History is being directed by Mira Nair and will comprise ten episodes in the first season.

Will Nicolas Cage Return to the Franchise?

Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Gates played the central role in the movies. Book of Secrets was supposed to be followed by a third film, but that script has never been greenlit. Though the producer has claimed that Nic’s movie is still in the works, Edge of History will continue the series for now. Cage himself has gained newfound popularity via his performances in films like Pig and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Cage may not be reprising his role in the series, but hopefully, if the show is successful, Disney will fast-track production on the threequel.

If the third film is really in the works, it would be possible for Nicolas Cage to return alongside Diane Kruger and others. Though there was a clear hint to the third film’s plot at the end of Book of Secrets, it isn’t probably possible to pick the story from that moment now that fifteen years have passed. Disney+ is perhaps trying to experiment with the franchise via a new account in a television format. If that goes well, who knows, it may act as a bridge between the previous two films and a potential third one.

National Treasure: Edge of History will feature Lisette Olivera, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Zuri Reed, Lyndon Smith, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The ten-episode first season is reported to stream at Disney+ sometime around early 2023.
