While there are still rumors lingering that a third movie in the National Treasure franchise is a possibility well over a decade after it was initially announced as being in development, the Disney+ TV series based on the much-loved Nicolas Cage franchise is steaming ahead. The title of the series has finally been revealed; it hints at another epic outing for the franchise, although this time around, it will reportedly not feature Cage but will have some connections to the movies.A title card shared by the Twitter account Disney’s National Treasure Series has revealed that the show will be called National Treasure: Edge of History, and both the title and appearance of the logo have been enough to get fans excited about the new installment which will deliver a new set of characters and a brand new storyline to Disney+ soon. There have been very few details released so far about the series’ plot, but the title alone seems to promise the same kind of Indiana Jones-style action sequences that made the original movies box office successes. Check out the title card below.

Recently Cage revealed that a possible National Treasure 3 is currently being held on the backburner while the TV series takes over the torch of the franchise. However, if the show is a runaway hit on Disney+, you can be certain that someone will be looking to put Cage back in action in a new movie very soon. With the actor having just had a huge hit with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, there probably couldn’t be a better time for Cage to make his return as Benjamin Franklin Gates.

Although National Treasure: Edge of History will primarily feature a brand new cast, including Lisette Alexis and Catherine Zeta-Jones, original star Justin Bartha will be reprising his role as Riley Poole in the series. Having played Poole in both previous movies, Bartha will provide a link to the previous movies in the franchise, but it is likely that the series will also callbacks to many plot points and events of the movies.

National Treasure: Edge of History will also star Zuri Reed as Tasha, Jordan Rodrigues as Ethan, Antonio Cipriano as Oren, and Jake Austin Walker as Liam. Lyndon Smith will play FBI Agent Ross. Although Nicolas Cage has not given any indication that he will make any kind of cameo appearance in the series, it is not outside the realms of possibility. His former National Treasure co-star Diane Kruger has also hinted that if a third movie did happen, she would be happy to join in, but she had reservations about a return to the franchise after so long. She previously said:

"I really don't know. No one ever contacted me about the third one, so I don't know. I feel like, at this point, we're way too old. I don't know. I mean, I would say, 'Never say never,' but it's been it's been a minute, you know?"

National Treasure: Edge of History is set to hit Disney+ sometime next year.
