Law & Order is one season away from breaking Gunsmoke's record as longest-running dramatic series and one story reveals the show will break the record while another story reveals it won't. Deadline TV is reporting that NBC is now planning on canceling Law & Order, ending its chances for a record-breaking 21st season on the air.

The site called the move "surprising" since the network had indicated they would pick the show up and break the record, but now with their strong development slate mostly in place for the upcoming season, it seems they have decided to bring the show to an end.

Ausiello Files is now reporting that NBC won't comment on the Deadline story, but the site spoke to a source close to the negotiations.

"It's a fluid situation," says a source close to the talks. "It's not a done deal. It's possible this is just a negotiations tactic."

NBC's upfront presentation happens next week, so we'll be sure to keep you posted on the fate of Law & Order as soon as we have more information.
