Act of Valor director Scott Waugh has signed on to helm DreamWorks' video game adaptation Need for Speed.

John Gatins (Real Steel) and his brother George Gatins (She's Out of My League) developed the project together, with George Gatins set to write the script. No story details were given, but the studio is aiming to start a franchise in the same vein as The Fast and the Furious.

Electronic Arts released the 18th installment in their Need for Speed video game franchise in November, with the plot-driven title Need for Speed: The Run. The series has generated more than $100 million in revenue for the company since the first version was launched in 1994.
