It looks like Neill Blomkamp has officially decided it is time to get to work on something new. The director of District 9 has been tied up for a while working on his Aliens sequel, but that is currently held up. So he decided to move onto something new. What exactly it is we don't know, but he did recently announce that he is indeed working on something that is not related to the Alien franchise.

Blomkamp took to his Instagram account to post a picture related to his mysterious new project, but it didn't give us a whole lot of clues as to what that project could possibly be. The image features a prosthetic humanoid looking person/creature with a very disfigured face and a very venous body. Blomkamp made it very clear that this was something new and not related to Alien 5. Here is what he had to say.

"Working on new things. Currently not alien."

Up to this point in his career Blomkamp has worked exclusively on original sci-fi movies of his own creation, so it isn't likely that he is working on another franchise movie. That being the case, it makes it pretty difficult to speculate as to what it might be. The director is developing a bit of a troubled history with franchise movies at this point and it is easy to imagine his frustrations are building. His first movie District 9 found a path to existence as his adaptation of the video game Halo fell apart. Now, his highly anticipated fifth installment of the Alien franchise has stalled out as well. Perhaps he will be able to turn this delay into something as exciting as District 9.

For about a year and a half, fans have been excited about the prospect of the proposed Alien 5 from Blomkamp, which all started when he posted some random concept art he was working on while promoting Chappie. The response to the art was feverish and that led to Fox greenlighting the movie. However, Chappie didn't do very well at the box office and at the same time Ridley Scott decided that he finally wanted to do his follow up to Prometheus, now titled Alien: Covenant. So that pretty much shelved Blomkamp's plans, at least for now. Though, Sigourney Weaver and the rest of the cast seem optimistic that the movie will get made at some point. We can only hope.

There is also the possibility that the image Blomkamp shared is related to the long-awaited sequel to District 9. Ever since that movie came out there has been talk of a potential sequel, which would be very welcome from fans and critics, as District 9 remains one of the finest original sci-fi movies of the last decade and a half. We will have to wait and see what Blomkamp has in store for us. Be sure to check out the Instagram post for yourself below.
