After officially acquiring the project last week, Sony Pictures has issued a March 27, 2015 release date for Chappie. As of now, the project is only going up against Fox's The Penguins of Madagascar on that date.

Sharlto Copley lends his voice to Chappie, a robot who possesses artificial intelligence. The android is stolen by two gangsters (Ninja and Yolandi Visser from Die Antwoord), who use it for their own nefarious purposes.

Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, District 9) is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Terri Tatchell. The director is also producing alongside Simon Kinberg, with production scheduled to begin sometime this fall.

Neill Blomkamp's latest film Elysium opened in theaters earlier this month, and has taken in nearly $100 million worldwide in less than two weeks of its theatrical release.
