Streaming giant Netflix has revealed our first look at the upcoming sequel to the 2019 Spanish science fiction horror outing, The Platform. Taking to social media to share the first images from the mysterious project, the sequel will take us back to the dystopia that so successfully disturbed audiences a few years ago. Check out the first look at The Platform sequel below...

“The story is far from over...” teases the caption alongside the images, which find two people, a large man and a small girl, trapped in the same kind of concrete cell where the first movie took place. While plot details (and pretty much everything else) regarding The Platform follow-up currently remain a mystery, Netflix does confirm that director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia will return to helm the project with the images revealing that Hovik Keuchkerian and Milena Smit will star.

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia from a screenplay by David Desola and Pedro Rivero, The Platform introduces audiences to the hellish existence of the inhabitants of a so-called "Vertical Self-Management Center." A large, concrete tower, the residents, are fed via a platform which, initially filled with food at the top floor, gradually descends through the tower's levels, stopping for a fixed amount of time on each. A microcosm of the haves and have-nots, as the residents at the top levels get to eat as much as they can while those at the bottom only get the leftovers, conflict soon ensues.

The Platform was met with critical acclaim and currently sits at 79% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. The Platform was also a big hit with audiences, being watched by 56 million households over its first four weeks of release and becoming one the most-watched original movies ever on Netflix.

A sequel to The Platform is not the only surprise horror follow-up coming from Netflix. The streaming service recently released the first trailer for Bird Box Barcelona, a sequel set in the same world as the 2018 post-apocalyptic hit.

“After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population by causing all who see it to take their lives, Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona,” the official synopsis for Bird Box Barcelona reads. “But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.”

The Spanish-language spin-off has been written and directed by Alex and David Pastor (The Occupant, The Head) and stars Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Celia Freijeiro with Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia.

Bird Box Barcelona is now scheduled to debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023.
