It appears that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings wants to be the dove in the looming format war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray, by asking studios to release their titles in both formats.
In a story from Video Business, it seems Hastings feels a war could make consumers nervous about getting behind either format.
"Protracted competition will hurt the adoption of high-definition DVD," the CEO said on Monday.
Hasting's has even asked that studios "follow the lead of Warner Home Video and Paramount Home Entertainment," which are planning to release their movies in the HD and Blu-ray formats.
"If all studios were to embrace both formats agnostically, consumers would be more comfortable making a format decision based on hardware pricing and features," he said said.
