Netflix has dropped a behind-the-scenes featurette for Extraction 2 as part of its TUDUM Fan Event. Chris Hemsworth, whose fate was left to uncertainty in the 2020's Extraction, is set to reprise his role as the protagonist, Tyler Rake in the sequel. Sam Hargrave also returns as director, with Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame) penning the screenplay. Golshifteh Farahani also reprises her role from the first film and will be joined by Daniel Bernhardt and Tinatin Dalakishvili.

Although not the official trailer, the Extraction 2 BTS look is high on action and promises a bigger and more thrilling sequel. You can check out the clip below.

The official synopsis for Extraction 2 reads:

"After barely surviving the events of the first movie, Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is back as the Australian black ops mercenary, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held."

Fans had been speculating that Extraction 2 could serve as an origin story for Hemsworth’s mercenary protagonist, but there was probably a reason behind Extraction's open ending: so Netflix could build a franchise around the film in case it turned out to be a hit, which it did.

Extraction is currently the sixth most watched movie on Netflix and was made on a considerably lower budget than the films ahead of it, like Red Notice and The Gray Man. Extraction also received positive reviews from fans and critics for its high-octane action sequences and Hemsworth’s commanding screen presence.

Extraction 2, like all good sequels, aims to double everything that made the original so much fun, which in this case are exhilarating stunts and the John Wick-Esque carnage. "A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into the making of this movie," Hemsworth said at TUDUM. And it’s clearly evident from the footage we’ve seen so far.

Extraction had a memorable long take sequence that was one of the highlights of the film, and the upcoming sequel plans to push the boundaries of filmmaking with an even more intricate and extreme action set piece, director Sam Hargrave mentions in the clip.

Featuring gun-fu, hand-to-hand combat, helicopters landing on moving trains, car chases, and prison brawls, it seems Extraction 2 will give Mission: Impossible 7 and John Wick 4 a run for their money when it arrives next year. And most of the stunts are CGI-free, with Hemsworth performing a majority on his own. "The end result is gonna blow people’s minds," Hargrave says. Well, consider it blown already.

After the success of Extraction, it was a no-brainer for Netflix to greenlight a sequel, but that won’t be all. As per Joe Russo, an Extraction shared universe consisting of origin movies and spinoffs is in the works at Netflix.

"I'm still not gonna commit because I think it's more exciting to surprise people, but I will say this: we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters. So if you're interested in David Harbour's character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie."

Extraction 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but Netflix has confirmed that the film will debut in 2023.
