While the Addams Family reboot series Wednesday is doing very well on Netflix, having since become the streamer's second most popular English-language series, the future of the show remains unclear. As of now, it has not been given an official renewal for season 2. This is baffling for many fans who may be wondering what the hold-up is, given the high viewership and praise that has been drawn by the series.

Straight from Netflix, an update has arrived on the show's renewal chances. The situation was addressed in a new Variety interview with Peter Friedlander, the streamer's head of U.S. and Canada scripted series. Friedlander cannot confirm or deny a renewal as of now, but with that said, he notes feeling "optimistic" about the show's future, suggesting that the people are Netflix are hopeful about moving forward. He also points out that the series is still brand new and there's a "lot to absorb" before necessarily moving forward with new episodes.

"You may know what I’m going to say — but I have nothing to confirm at this time. I am optimistic about Wednesday. We’ll leave it at that. Weirdly, because it feels different, but we’re just two weeks into the launch of Wednesday. So we’re still really at the beginning of this cultural phenomenon. And there’s a lot to absorb and learn about it."

Friedlander goes on to speak about the show's rapid rise in popularity while offering high praise to series star Jenna Ortega along with some of the other cast members.

"It’s striking how quick something like this can explode on Netflix, and there is a lot you want to hear back from fans and audiences. It’s not just the dance, it’s people dressing up and buying makeup and wanting to look like Wednesday Addams. The resurgence, for me, it’s something that’s been in the culture for a long time — but never this pronounced. It’s something that we want to study and understand why this is such a phenomenon. And I think so much of it is Jenna’s extraordinary performance at the center. But that supporting cast, across the board, are legends: Gwendoline Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán and Christina Ricci!"

Will Wednesday Get a Renewal?

Viewership is high, reviews are strong, and a Netflix exec is openly "optimistic" about the series getting a renewal. That optimism is on both sides, as the showrunners have also teased what's to come in future episodes. Even so, word has not yet come in that a renewal will happen. Nothing is guaranteed, as it's always possible that a snag in negotiations could end up derailing any planned project. In any case, it definitely seems more likely than not that Wednesday will be renewed.

For now, you can watch the first season of Wednesday on Netflix.
