November is a month bestrewed with a configuration of celebratory and commemorative dates, from Armistice Day and Black Friday to, of course, Thanksgiving. The latter is a holiday of gratification, a giving of thanks to the harvest. The celebration's roots can be traced back to the 17th century, when English pilgrims celebrated the harvest with a festive feast. Like your misbehaving uncle at last year’s Thanksgiving, Netflix didn’t entirely get the memo this year. While one can feast on the fruits of many highly-anticipated Netflix TV series in November (Wednesday, 1899, Dead to Me, The Crown, Blockbuster), the streaming platform is dishing up less new original movies than one would prefer, though they do look good.

Considering the time of year, with filmmakers and production companies gearing up toward award season, you’d be forgiven for expecting Netflix to up the ante with their output of new and original content. Though, it isn’t all doom and gloom, with a handful of intriguing originals due to be released sporadically during November, including one film, in particular, tipped for Oscar triumph…

The Takeover

Directed by Annemarie Van De Mond, The Takeover is Dutch movie about a hacker’s journey to clearing her name of a murder that she did not commit, while tracking down the criminals who are blackmailing her, and has all the potential to be an enthralling dramatic thriller. Mel Bandison (Holly Mae Brood) works against the clock, while simultaneously attempting to evade the law in what looks to be a better, gender-swapped version of the Chris Pine thriller The Contractor.

Enola Holmes 2

Millie Bobbie Brown is set to reprise the role of Enola Holmes in the second installment of the Sherlock spin-off. The film will continue to follow the story of Sherlock Holmes’ somewhat obnoxious twin sister Enola who, like her revered older brother, has a penchant for solving even the most perplexing of mysteries.

In Enola Holmes 2, Enola must lean on both friends, and her seasoned brother to get to the bottom of the case of a missing girl. With a stellar cast, including the great David Thewlis, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter, the sequel is expected to be as fun and engaging as the last.

Falling for Christmas

Lindsay Lohan appears in the movie Falling For Christmas, one of the year’s first Christmas “crackers,” albeit seven weeks prematurely; unfortunately, “Mid-November Cracker” doesn’t have the same ring to it. Following a skiing accident, Sierra Belmont (Lohan) suffers from amnesia, she is subsequently taken in by kind-hearted, handsome cabin owner Jake (Chord Overstreet) and his daughter. No prizes for predicting the outcome…

My Father’s Dragon

Netflix’s My Father’s Dragon looks to be a beautiful animated movie from Cartoon Saloon, who made the brilliant trilogy of Irish folklore cartoons The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers, and stars Stranger Things’ Gaten Matarazzo, Jacob Tremblay, and Whoopi Goldberg. My Father's Dragon received its world premiere at the London Film Festival earlier this month, and has already been receiving acclaim.

Netflix original animations have been on the up, with recent releases such as The Sea Beast and The Mitchells vs. the Machines proving monumentally popular, so it comes as no surprise that My Father’s Dragon has been backed by a substantial budget. Based on the author Ruth Stiles Gannett’s 1948 novel of the same name, My Father’s Dragon tells the tale of a runaway youth, Elmer Elevator who embarks on a search for a captive dragon.

The Wonder

The 'Nuevo Cine Mexicano' movement has produced some of Hollywood's hottest directors today, including what's known as 'The Three Amigos,' Alejandro G. Inarritu, Guillermo Del Toro, and Alfonso Cuarón, who have all been garnering acclaim and Oscar gold. Sebastian Lelio is another such name, albeit perhaps less known; the man behind A Fantastic Woman, which scooped the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, is in line to be crowned Best Director at next year’s Academy Awards for his new movie The Wonder, which would make him the fourth director of Hispanic descent in just nine years to win the prestigious Oscar.

Florence Pugh’s performance as British nurse Lib Wright has had critics raving. The Wonder, a period-drama set in mid-19th century Ireland, concerns the story of Victorian-era “fasting girls” who are said to have found ways to starve their body of food for months at a time. It is a movie that brings the age-old debate of science vs religion to the fore, and begins to unravel the true meaning of the word “miracle.” The Wonder is certainly a must-see this autumn.

Slumberland

Francis Lawrence’s fantasy adventure Slumberland follows the endearing tale of Nema (Marlow Barkley), who discovers a secret map to the mystical world of Slumberland. She recruits the aid of Flip (Jason Momoa), a criminal with an eccentric disposition — Willy Wonka with a felonious record, and a roguish beard and hip-length hair. Together the pair travel through both dreams and nightmares, as Nema harbors the hopes of reconnecting with her later father one day. Based on the 1905 comics Little Nemo in Slumberland, the fantastical film has been highly anticipated, and Momoa looks like a real delight here.

The Swimmers

The Swimmers is a new film from Sally El Hosain (My Brother the Devil) based on the fascinating true story of Yusra and Sarah Mardini, Syrian refugees who, having fled the conflict in their homeland, battle through treacherous seas to reach the shores of Greece. The Swimmers portrays the heart-warming, feel-good, and inspirational story of the sisters who go from war to swimming at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in just a matter of years. It is a beautiful tale of resolve, resilience, and the mental fortitude of not only escaping war, but using that as a motivational tool to excel.
