When fallen crimson leaves begin to accumulate on sidewalks and roads, flocks of birds migrate to sunnier shores, and Netflix and theatrical release schedules begin to stack up, it's clear that Autumn is fast approaching. With awards season on the horizon, the promise of an influx of new, hotly-anticipated, and high-quality movies creates quite the clamor at the box office. While the streaming platform’s "box office" comes in the form of its subscriber base, Netflix bosses will doubtlessly be hoping the assurances of fresh, exciting material will help compensate for the loss of a million subscribers in one quarter this year by encouraging new clientele to sign-up.

As the days get shorter, and for many, colder, Netflix has announced a string of new original movies they’ll be adding to the platform next month, and contrary to Green Day’s insistence, wake yourselves up before September ends… Here are the major Netflix originals coming to the streaming service in September 2022…

Love in the Villa - 1st September

Tom Hopper and Kat Graham in Love in the Villa on Netflix
Netflix

After recently splitting up with her long-term boyfriend, Julie (the vibrant Kat Graham of The Vampire Diaries) decides to take a dream holiday to Verona in Italy, in Love in the Villa. It quickly transpires that the Italian villa she reserved is double-booked, and she'll have to share it with a pessimistic stranger (played by the wonderful Tom Hopper of Umbrella Academy and Game of Thrones). The film is directed by Mark Steven Johnson after Netflix liked his work on the rom-com Love, Guaranteed, and the writer/director should bring the same light but insightful touch he's brought to scripts like Grumpy Old Men and Christopher Robin.

End of the Road - 9th September

Queen Latifah in Netflix movie End of the Road
Netflix

Queen Latifah and Ludacris star in Millicent Shelton’s dramatic thriller End of the Road, which looks like high-octane entertainment. During a family-friendly, idyllic cross-country road trip, Brenda (Queen Latifah) and her family’s holiday quickly descends into chaos when they encounter a murderer on the rampage. Stranded in the middle of the desert, Brenda and her family have to face up to the real threat of the bloodthirsty killer. Director Millicent Shelton took a break from her epic shooting schedule as one of the most in-demand TV directors today (with credits ranging from The Walking Dead and 30 Rock to Castle and The Flash) to make this efficient suspense film.

Do Revenge - 16th September

Do Revenge
Netflix

Do Revenge is set to be very much a ‘girl power’ movie, one that hits back at misogyny and attempts to smash the patriarchy. Starring Maya Hawke and Camilla Mendes, the film follows the tale of two adolescents who team up to exact revenge on each other’s nemesis in retaliation to a leaked sex tape and a nasty rumor. From the brief synopsis, it is shaping up to be a dark but fun revenge comedy that confronts a 21st-century issue head-on.

Blonde - 23rd September

Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde on Netflix
Netflix

Whether it be that shot of a 28-year-old Marilyn Monroe, giddily standing on a Subway grating battling the elements as her white frock is blown upward in The Seven Year Itch, or the picture of her leaning slightly precariously over a rooftop balcony in front of a New York backdrop, these images of the cultural icon have become immortalized in popular culture. While there have been many theatrical portrayals of the emblematic blonde, there has still yet to be a definitive, mega-hit tribute that thoroughly captures the beauty, the splendor, and the impact Monroe had on the arts. It is hoped Andrew Dominik’s Netflix original Blonde will explore and depict Monroe in a more refined, more detailed light.

For all the coverage, media scrutiny, and documentation, Marilyn Monroe remains a name steeped in mystique. Known essentially for her enchantress looks and curvaceous physique, and unfortunately defined by her superficial traits and fake name, Blonde is anticipated to give a deeper, more meaningful and nuanced look at an often misunderstood icon. Ana de Armas assumes the mantle of Monroe, or in Blonde’s case, her Christian name, Norma Jeane, which is perhaps the most telling leak we’ve had so far. It gives us a sneak peek into a biopic that not only offers an exploration into her life from her rise to fame and her tragic demise, but a biopic that delves into uncharted waters revealing the true person behind the name.

A Jazzman’s Blues - 23rd September

A Jazzman's Blues
Netflix

Written, produced, and directed by Tyler Perry, A Jazzman’s Blues is set in the deep South shortly after the conclusion of WWII. It follows the story of a forbidden romance and the tale of a mysterious murder that has remained unsolved for 40 years. Tyler Perry has spoken of his long-fought battle to have this movie made, having written it over 25 years ago, and now it's finally coming to fruition. A beautiful trailer was recently released (featuring the new song from Ruth B. which accompanies the film), and audiences can't wait.

Athena - 23rd September

Athena movie on Netflix
Netflix

In the explosive, albeit brief Athena trailer, we are exposed to the aftermath of what appears to be a riot outside a Habitation à Loyer Modéré, a French council housing estate, where a group of young French militia armed with stools, spears, and an assortment of weapons looks over the remains of overturned cars, fires, and destruction.

Romain Gavras’ feature film about three brothers and the immediate consequences of the incomprehensible death of their youngest brother and the disorder that ensues thereafter is set to premiere on the platform next month. From what little we know of the synopsis, similarities will no doubt be drawn to Mathieu Kassovitz’s coming-of-age classic, La Haine.

Lou - 23rd September

Allison Janney in Lou movie on Netflix
Netflix

Netflix has acquired Lou, a movie widely tipped for award recognition in the coming months. Allison Janney plays Lou, a young woman whose daughter has been kidnapped by her father. In what looks like Janney's mature version of Taken, Anna Foerster’s movie will explore the themes of feminism and the murky gray ethics of revenge, with a key focus on the empowerment of women.

The Munsters - 27th September

Sheri Moon Zombie in The Munsters
Universal Pictures
Netflix

Rob Zombie's cinematic remake of the classic '60s television show, The Munsters has been one of the most surprisingly anticipated movies of the year. Rob Zombie's films have certainly had their fan base, but the level of excitement surrounding this film might indicate that going in a PG-rated direction was a great decision for the iconoclastic director. Zombie seems to be lovingly interpreting the source material, but injecting just enough of his own surreal color palette and '70s exploitation influence to make this film his own. There has been a lot of speculation regarding the film, from a more epic runtime to The Munsters being a straight-up funny, faithful, and family-friendly film. We'll have to wait and see.
