March 17th, 2022, two years after the first mention, Netflix announced the July release of the anticipated re-envisioning of the horror franchise favorite Resident Evil. At the time of the announcement, it was noted that the new series was not linked to the adrenaline-racing Resident Evil featuring Alice (Milla Jovovich), the game, or the 2021 cinematic release.

As stated in USA Today, " Netflix's Resident Evil is another reboot of sorts. Constantin Film's involvement is the only connection to anything in the franchise."

The Netflix offering takes an alternative look at the foundations of the zombie outbreak. The series also looks at The Umbrella Corporation's role in the apocalypse via manipulation of the T-Virus. Some ties anchor the 2022 series to the Resident Evil universe; for example, the inclusion of the devil dog Paul W. S. Anderson introduces in the 2002 release. Another tie-in is the introduction of Wesker, who appears in the game series and the novel Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy by S.D Perry. Otherwise, the series introduces new characters and perspectives, demonstrating the re-imagining differs from the original franchise.

Nevertheless, this re-imagined version has its brand of intrigue. Yet, as compelling as the storyline, there remain gaps in the plot that beg answering. With hope, the creators will answer many of these questions in season two.

Season One Plot Recap

In the 2022 re-imagining, genetically modified twins Billie (Siena Agudong as young Billie, Adeline Rudolph as adult Billie) and Jade (Tamara Smart as young Jade, Ella Balinska as adult Jade), daughters of Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick), are the nuclei. Most of the series details events leading up to the global viral outbreak and then segue into post-apocalyptic times. Jade is on a one-woman covert mission while on the run from Umbrella. The pursuit of Jade is driven by Billie, her twin sister, with designs of her own.

However, nothing appears to stand in Billie's way of bringing Jade back to Umbrella alive. The action sequences track Billie's relentless endeavor until the tide turns upon discovering Jade's secret.

What Happened After That Fatal Night?

The series chronicles the Wesker sister's move to and interactions in an eerily whitewashed Umbrella-run gated community. So naturally, no story exists without delving into the origins of these principal characters. And the creators provide insight into the twins' births through a small dialogue segment. Evelyn (Paola Núñez), the Umbrella director, provides the information as she expounds on the misguided intentions of Dr. Wesker.

However, the background is not the only important factor. Equally important is what transpired between the events in the community and the 2036 post-apocalyptic present. So, it is warranted that season two gives viewers insight into those in-between years. Those between years and missing events should likely explain Jade's covert mission and Billie's passionate desire to hunt her sister at all costs. The sisters seem to have an unbreakable bond that compels them to disregard the implications of their actions in their teenage years.

What Is Bea?

However, a single event, Billie's discovery of her sister's hidden secret, not only turns the tide but seemingly dissolves familial ties permanently. This lends one to inquire about the importance of Jade's daughter. What does Billie want with Jade's daughter that Jade's life no longer has significance?

The series finale finds Jade's daughter (Ella Zieglmeier) has an uncanny ability to tame a mutant crocodile, bringing to the surface other questions. Bea's special gift makes one wonder if Jade's daughter is genetically modified. This also raises the question of Bea's paternity. Better yet, does Jade's daughter have a father? Ultimately, could the final reveal indicate Bea could carry the cure to the T-Virus?

How Did Billie Gain Leadership in Umbrella?

The series contains allusions to Jade's big project, a project she worked on before she departed from Umbrella Corporation. Billie brings this to light during one of their exchanges. Billie insists Jade is not much unlike her. Given this information, it would be of particular interest to understand how Billie rose to her position with Umbrella. And why does she choose a partnership knowing what she does about Evelyn? Even more so, why does the director permit the sporadic control of her body to meet the Corporation's needs?

Where/What Is the Original Wesker?

There were several exciting reveals, one being Wesker's origin. His daughters discover he was a clone, part of a prior Umbrella project. Towards the end, Dr. Wesker becomes a liability to Umbrella. Thus, Evelyn gives him an ultimatum. Part of that ultimatum is that he works on a secret project.

While there are only glimpses, the top-secret project appears to be a mutated Wesker. This leads one to presume the mutation is the original Wesker. Thus, it would be a travesty not to develop this storyline further in season two. Not only is it essential to know if the mutant is the original Wesker, but why has it been kept secret from the cloned Dr. Wesker? This is especially intriguing given Wesker's position with Umbrella and his role in the success of the development of the T-Virus. Furthermore, inquiring minds want to know what havoc the mutant wreaks on the neighborhood after its release.

Answering the questions surrounding Wesker and the twins will be enough to keep the writers busy. And while not wholly essential to the storyline, questions remain about Tijuana and its ties to the broader apocalypse. There are also questions about the origins of the underground group, Umbrella's primary resistance, and Jade's saving grace. Filling in these plot points would also help solidify the ongoing story.

Resident Evil 2022 widely varies from the original film, literary, and video game series. However, the divergence is not bad if judged as a stand-alone re-envisioning. Because as aforementioned, there is a certain intrigue to the story, and it does not lack entertainment value. Yet, one can conclude that the ability to maintain relative success rests on answering some lingering questions.

However, fans may have to wait longer to get the answers as there is no exact date for release. But projections indicate as What's on Netflix notes a possible 2024 release
