6 Set it Up (2018)

Set it up
Netflix

The plot of setting two people up isn't a novel trope in the rom-com genre, but 2018's Set it Up approaches it in a unique way that feels fresher than others. It's about two assistants (Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell) who set their bosses (Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs) up, but end up falling for each other as well in the process.

Set it Up is rather predictable from the jump, but there's just something that's sweet and charming about the movie and the characters that makes it worth watching anyway. That's likely why the movie works so well. It follows the typical rom-com formula to a T, and while that may sound a bit boring, the cast makes up for it.

5 You've Got Mail (1998)

You've Got Mail
Warner Bros.

Released in 1998, You've Got Mail is a very '90s rom-com. It's about two people (Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan) who fall into an online romance, without realizing they're real life business rivals, making for an unexpected pairing. With dial-up internet starring in one of the lead roles in the movie, You've Got Mail feels like a 1990s time capsule.

It's the third romance movie Hanks and Ryan starred in together, and they make a great pair on screen. They're lovable, warm, inviting, and have such great chemistry that their relationship just pulls you in. Truly, the lead performances are what really make You've Got Mail worth the watch and while a dial-up internet romance may be a bit dated, it still holds up as a great rom-com today.

Bac Films

2003's Love Actually is an iconic rom-com that doubles as a holiday movie. It features an ensemble cast of predominantly British actors including Andrew Lincoln, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, and Colin Firth. It tells 10 different stories about various characters all delving into different aspects of love, amongst the backdrop of the Christmas season.

Love Actually isn't necessarily groundbreaking as a rom-com. It features some classic, cliché tropes like a standard meet-cute moment and a mad dash to the airport before a character's love interest leaves the country. However, despite its overly sweet and slightly cliché nature, Love Actually's outstanding cast really makes this movie shine, achieving it classic status.

Netflix

Always Be My Maybe premiered on Netflix in 2019 and was written by Ali Wong, Randall Park, and Michael Golamco, starring Wong and Park as the leads. It's about two friends Sasha (Wong) and Marcus (Park) who haven't had contact with each other since they had a fling that ended badly when they were teens. But when they reconnect years later as adults, they realize their romantic chemistry is still present.

Always Be My Maybe breathes new life into the rom-com genre without completely reinventing it. It feels fresh, charming, and relatable without the cringe that rom-coms often bring. It's also genuinely funny with Wong and Park in the lead roles. Their relationship is believable and everything about the movie — from the plot, to the cast, to the writing and pacing — just works.

1 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Columbia Pictures

Is When Harry Met Sally a cheesy rom-com? Possibly, yes. But this 1989 hit is one of the most beloved in the genre, and luckily it's streamable right now. The movie follows Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) through 12 years of chance encounters and attempts to explore the question of whether men and women can maintain a Platonic relationship successfully.

Written by Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle), When Harry Met Sally is warm and touching. It's really all about love finding a way, despite everything, when it's meant to be. And as cheesy as that may sound, it's a fantastic movie that is guaranteed to warm your heart and make you smile, whether you like rom-coms or not.
