Andromache of Scythia (Charlize Theron) and her swashbuckling team of immortals are back to take another stand in The Old Guard 2. The gripping and mysterious Netflix original The Old Guard immersed viewers in a world of international, timeless thrills that were literally timeless. Andromache, aka Andy, has assembled a team of immortal warriors, some centuries old and some just coming into their new reality, to defend innocents and save the world from violence and criminal deeds with almost clairvoyant precision.

The Old Guard 2 will be directed by Victoria Mahoney, who has previous directing credits on Lovecraft Country and Queen Sugar. The Old Guard was directed by Gina-Prince Bythewood, but both films were written by Greg Rucka, the graphic novel's original writer, which inspired the franchise.

What can we expect from this highly anticipated sequel? The Old Guard is a dark, daring, mystery-laden action thriller that leaves the book open to much important information. Fans can't wait to see the sequel finally answer some of our most burning questions about the characters and plot backstory. Let's unpack what we hope to see from the various character storylines in the sequel.

How Did Andy Become the First Known Immortal?

One of the nuances that made the first movie so compelling is how little we know about the main character, Theron's Andy. In a story that rotates around immortality and the characters' ages, we have no idea how old Andy is. Neither we nor the other main characters on Andy's team of immortals know much about her backstory or personal history. It seems inevitable that The Old Guard 2 will focus heavily on her past events, previous fallen and living acquaintances, and maybe even wield twists and turns.

We know almost for certain that Andy is the first of her kind, the first known immortal. How did she become this way? Is she responsible for the creation of the other immortal warriors? The Kingdom of Scythia, a real region according to historical records, that is, in The Old Guard, associated with Andromache's name, is said to have existed in the Pontic Scythian Steppe from the 6th to 3rd century BC. As if that timeframe isn't old enough, it's possible that Andromache might be even older and simply chooses to identify with the long-dispersed kingdom of Scythia for some reason.

The sequel is also expected to tell us why Andy is losing her immortality now and how she can get it back. While there's a chance she can't and that the next fatal blow will be her last, this seems unlikely since Theron's portrayal of Andy is widely acclaimed, and there are plans to produce a third movie after the sequel's release.

How Does Andy Choose Who to Save?

Another really important question we hope the sequel addresses is how Andy knows who to rally her team to save. She somehow manages to save people from death and danger who go on to do something special in their lives, which changes the world and saves many more lives. Where is she getting her information from? What primal forces does she tap into that tell her how to both, directly and indirectly, make a lot more living possible?

Circling back around to Andy's backstory, it will be exhilarating to hopefully learn in the sequel how and why Andy became motivated to do all that she does. This mystery seems to be inextricably tied to the eventual discovery by Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) of the team's powers and their first instance of being discovered and targeted by the outside world for their powers.

How Did Quynh Escape and What Is Her Future?

Finally, it's safe to say that the biggest mystery teased by The Old Guard is that of Quynh (Ngô Thanh Vân). How did she escape her dreadful fate of imprisonment at the bottom of the ocean? She has been missing and drowning perpetually, as far as the Old Guard is concerned, for 500 years. We not only want to know how she escaped but when? And most crucially of all, what is she planning to do now?

She obviously didn't run back to Andy and join her band of immortals but has remained hidden in the shadows and now has some plan for the Old Guard that the sequel will undoubtedly explore. At the end of the movie, she reconnected with Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts). Because he is now banished from the team for a century, perhaps Quynh believes she has found a new ally in him. The final scene that teased her return showed her in deep reds and shadowy lighting.

According to cinematic language, that's all we need as an audience to know that Quynh has something that's more sinister planned for Andy and her teammates, or at least that she wants us to think that she does.

There is as yet no plot information, telling imagery, or specifics available about the film, but we can glean a lot by again assessing what happened in the first movie and identifying clues. Based on the events of The Old Guard, we can expect to learn more about Copley's backstory and motivations, and Quynh will make her existence known, which should be emotional and difficult for Andy. The pharmaceutical company that Copley tipped off the immortals' existence to will also have a presence in the plot.

Other exciting announcements include the additions of Uma Therman and Henry Golding as new cast members. The Old Guard 2 is expected to be released on Netflix in 2023. We can't wait to see the franchise's next installment and the fate of Andy and her immortals!
