Antivirus founder turned fugitive John McAfee’s life on the run after becoming a suspect in the 2012 murder of his neighbor in Belize will be depicted in a new Netflix documentary titled Running with the Devil. The creator of the McAfee antivirus software company asked a film crew to document his experience as he evaded the authorities and the Mexican cartel, apparently. The journalists were thrown into McAfee’s whirlwind life as they trekked through Belize and Guatemala before ending up on a boat headed to the Bahamas, all with guns, drugs, and alcohol in tow. Things really went downhill for McAfee when police in Belize eyed him as a person of interest in the murder of his neighbor, Gregory Faull. From then on, things got even more bizarre. McAfee tried to run for president and even developed a “hack-proof” phone.

The British-American became extremely wealthy by protecting others’ computers, and yet decided at some point that the best way to protect himself was to move overseas, arm himself to the hilt, ingest a gut load of drugs and booze, and hop-scotched between locations, fleeing from law enforcement and shadowy figures that he felt lurked around every corner. John McAfee had been living in Belize for years when Vice reporter Rocco Castoro and cameraman Robert King caught up with him in December 2012. During this time, McAfee is hiding from Belizean authorities, who he thinks are going to kill him because they believe he killed his neighbor, 52-year-old Florida native Gregory Faull, who was shot once in the back of the head just days after the two had a spat over McAfee’s dogs and their intimidating conduct toward Faull’s beloved parrot.

McAfee comes across as a smart, self-centered rich guy with a brain scrambled by far too many illicit substances, including, as one person suggests, copious bath salts. In 2019, King rejoined McAfee on a boat that soon made its way to the Dominican Republic. Despite their comments about his dangerousness and, also, the possibility that McAfee killed Faull as well as, Robert King and ghostwriter Alex Cody Foster both speak fondly of him. Running with the Devil chronicles McAfee’s brief but wild odyssey with Castoro and King, whose presence was intended to feed his ego and protect him from public arrest. McAfee died by suicide via hanging on June 23, 2021, in a Barcelona prison, where he was awaiting extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges that could have landed him 30 years behind bars.

Running with the Devil premieres on Netflix on August 24th.
