The Avatar team had some exciting news for fans during San Diego Comic-Con. During the panel, Janet Varney, the voice of Korra and host of Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, revealed news of the upcoming Avatar movie. The clip and transcript can be viewed below, where she confirmed that the upcoming animated movie will be focusing on Aang and his friends!

“Hello Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast friends and Avatar-verse lovers! It’s me, Janet, and I am so sad not to be at San Diego Comic-Con with Dante and with all of you. I’ve just been doing a little reading while I recuperate, and it reminded me that we actually have some exclusive Avatar Studios news for you all! Now, there have been a lot of rumors floating around, a lot of speculation and a lot of excitement – I feel it too. But we figured it was time to set the record straight. The first feature length movie from Avatar Studios will be focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends, and I for one cannot wait!”

The film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and will be developed by Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Animation. The film is currently still untitled, but is set to be the first in a trilogy. Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra series creators, are producing alongside Eric Coleman. The film is a project from the newly established Avatar Studios, which is devoted to creating new and original content set in the much loved Avatar universe.

Aang made his grand debut in the first episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2005. The last of his kind, Aang teams up with his friends to learn how to control all four elements (Air, Water, Earth, and Fire) before the Fire Nation can complete its takeover. As Team Avatar travels from the Water Tribes, to the Earth Kingdom, and eventually the Fire Nation, they are tailed by Prince Zuko, the shamed and exiled prince of the Fire Nation. The group also makes new friendships and allies along the way, like the blind earth bender Toph and the skilled women warriors of Kyoshi Island. The series was a smash hit among critics and audiences of all ages.

The success brought on the sequel series which premiered in 2012, The Legend of Korra, which followed Aang’s reincarnated form, Korra. Feisty and headstrong, Korra tries to balance the ways of old and new as technology advances, spirits run amok, and political extremists rear their heads. Korra was met with similar praise to its predecessor, particularly with how it handled adult political themes.

The Avatar series has spanned across videogames, comics, novels, and an infamously panned live action film in 2010. Currently, there is another live action remake in the works at Netflix. Initially DiMartino and Konietzko were signed on as executive producers and showrunners, but later on departed the series due to creative differences.

Currently, there is no news of the film’s plot. Will it be a remake? Will it be an all-new story? Will the trilogy of films tell one great story or will they be individual tales? Fans will have to wait for more information to come out. Until then, these possibilities are all up in the air.
