The new DCU just dropped. James Gunn just made his first big announcement for what could be called DC Phase 1. But James Gunn prefers to give his franchise a more storied vibe as he comes out with DC: Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters. There was a huge explosion not even ten minutes after Gunn posted a video to his Twitter detailing the first ten projects of the new DC Universe. Fans have been calling for this moment since last year, and Gunn did not disappoint. After obsessive searches, fan theories, and a wait that lasted too long, we finally have something to look forward to in the DCU.

James Gunn has finally given fans what they’ve been asking for. So now we can wonder in which direction is the DCU actually going. We have the names of everything that’s going to be happening in DC’s immediate future, but how will everything come together? Where will this path lead us in a universe that fans have continually compared as “less than” Marvel? The world holds its breath for answers. But we can finally begin to speculate, as James Gunn begins to give us an outline of the foreseeable future.

The First Ten Projects

James Gunn announced the first ten film and television projects that DC will be producing after the coming “pre-Gunn era” films come out. He calls this new beginning Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters. The title might take its name from a limited run of a Justice League comic that came out in 2015. The comic detailed a type of alternate reality for the DC Universe but didn’t run for very long. The new line of projects will premiere in line with all the projects that have already been planned for DC. It seems that it was Gunn’s number one priority to make sure everything in the DCU is connected along a similar story.

Gunn began listing his projects in chronological order. The first being Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which has been scheduled to premiere this February since before Gunn became the head of DC Studios. He was happy to announce that Shazam had always been a part of its own world and so connected quite easily with The Flash, which will be coming up next.

The biggest announcement he might have made was that audiences can expect the upcoming The Flash movie to reset the entire DCU. Fans are left wondering how exactly this will happen. It may be a reference to the Flashpoint Paradox run of DC Comics or may be talking about some other time The Flash bent the laws of physics to change the universe. But one thing is for sure: Barry Allen may be getting a lot more attention in the next few months. After this comes Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s run really begins.

Gunn was very specific when he said that his announcement included only part of the first chapter and did not comprise all of it. So, keep that in mind when you’re looking for everything that DC is putting out in the next few years. The first project in this new era is called Creature Commandos. It’s a story about some strange characters set in World War II. Gunn noted that he would be having certain characters moving into and out of animation with voice actors playing the character in live-action shows and vice versa. So get ready for that.

Next is likely the project all the fans saw when Gunn posted that #caturday story on Instagram called Waller. Though Season 2 of Peacemaker has been put on hold, it looks like the show will feed directly into the Waller series, with Viola Davis reprising her role. There are some very exciting writers on this project as well.

Then Gunn finally announced the one title we’ve all been waiting for, the true start of the new DC Universe: a movie called Superman: Legacy. This is the movie that Gunn is casting the younger Superman for. Gunn is writing it personally, and it’ll be two years before we see hide or hair of it. But after that, fans of DC Comics will be excited to hear that DC is going to start a new HBO series called Lanterns. The show will revolve around two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. This will be the first time we’ve seen John Stewart in a live-action production.

James Gunn seemed very excited about the next project which was a film called The Authority. Which is a new movie for DC. It’s based on characters from the Wildstorm universe which, up until now, was produced by DC but not really a part of its continuity. Wonder Woman comes into the picture with the series Paradise Lost which will tell the origin story of Paradise Island, aka Themyscira, home of the Amazons. Gunn compared this to Game of Thrones.

Batman makes his premiere next with Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run, the next DCU Batman will star both Batman and Robin and discuss the story of Damien Wayne and the Bat Family. Then there’s another cult fan favorite, Booster Gold. It’ll tell the story of a loser from the future who came back to the past to be a superhero. Fans of the 80s really dig this guy.

After that, two of what may be considered the most ambitious projects of the DCU are coming up. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be a film showing a different kind of Kryptonian. And Swamp Thing will be a dark horror that fans of DC have been asking for forever. And both will feed into the larger narrative Gunn is composing. Fans better strap in, because it looks like there’s a great journey ahead for comic book fans.
