It was heavily rumored that a new TV spot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would feature some new footage, and that is exactly what we got today as tickets went on sale for the next Marvel Studios feature film, which arrives in cinemas next month. With the new footage came a sense that those who have not yet watched Disney+ series WandaVision should maybe do so in the next few weeks, as the film appears to have doubled down on its connection to the MCU’s first TV show in a big way.

While other trailers for the Doctor Strange sequel have shown Strange visiting Wanda, and images of Elizabeth Olsen’s character appearing in multiple forms, including that seen in WandaVision, the new footage has also shown the return of Wanda’s children from the series. The kids were last heard in the post credit scene of the show as Wanda perused the Darkhold in search of a way to save them from what is now clearly another dimension of the multiverse.

Although Marvel has previously linked their movies very heavily, and many of their first run of Disney+ series have relied on fans having watched the movies and knowing who the characters are, this will be the first time that one of the films has been partly driven by events seen in one of the shows and will test how much Marvel fans are invested in the MCU as a whole. With Spider-Man: No Way Home seeming to confirm further that universe-spanning movies are what audiences want, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will certainly push that theory to its limits.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home pulled characters from Sony’s Universe of Spider-Man Characters, this outing for Doctor Strange will not only pull in characters that are known to audiences but has promised to bring us variants of well-known heroes as well as crossing over characters from its TV platform series such as WandaVision and What If...? to its cinematic one. With tickets now on sale, it will not take too long to tell whether this is something that fans are on board with or if it is bringing too much to the party.

So far, movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame have been hugely popular without including any preamble and just expected audiences to know the world they were stepping into. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should be playing directly to its core audience, who have been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe saga for over a decade now, and if the movie proves to be anywhere near as successful as expected, then it could be the final proof anyone needs that Marvel’s storytelling ability is going to continue for a long while to come and will be almost impossible for anyone ever to match.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness tickets are on sale now, and the movie arrives in cinemas on May 6th.
