New Line Cinema has bought the rights to re-make the Spanish trilogy Torrente, a dark comedy film series about a corrupt cop.

The Hollywood Reporter says Mike Bender and Doug Chernack have been brought on board to write the U.S. version, which will follow the exploits of Jose Luis Torrente, a poster child for police corruption who is a lazy, rude, despicable drunkard, caring only about protecting and serving himself. Despite that, he still manages to get the job done.

The original movie series was written, directed, and starred popular Spanish comedian-director Santiago Segura. Production for the new series will begin sometime late this year; look for Torrente in theaters next year.
