Alongside the image, Hemsworth has teased the level of stunt work that will be on display when Extraction 2 debuts on Netflix. "We sort of went for the moon," Hemsworth says of their intentions for the action sequences. "In a very crowded world of action, I think we did something that's very unique."

Released back in 2020, the first Extraction was directed by former stuntman Sam Hargrave and written by Avengers: Endgame's Joe Russo. The action flick follows Thor: Love and Thunder star Chris Hemsworth as a black-market mercenary named Tyler Rake, who has been left with nothing to lose thanks to his long, violent career. While at his lowest ebb, Rake is given a chance at redemption when he is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.

While Tyler Rake is riddled with bullet wounds and falls off a bridge come the end of Extraction, Extraction 2 will pick up with the unstoppable mercenary having survived. Plot details have been kept largely under wraps, but it seems that Tyler will be called back into action and tasked with “breaking into an impenetrable prison on order to rescue the family of a merciless Georgian gangster.”

"It's an escape mission," Hargrave reveals. "But it's bigger, badder, more deadly, and more dangerous than anything we've seen Rake go through."

Extraction 2 Will be an Action Movie Fans Fantasy Come to Life

It has also been revealed that Extraction 2 will delve deeper into the mysterious, no doubt violent, past of Tyler Rake. Of course, the sequel won’t let itself get too bogged down with silly things like character development, with both Hemsworth and Hargreaves eager to push the action and spectacle to another level. "We've got fist fights, car chases, explosions, trains, helicopters," Hargrave explains. "It's like an action fan's fantasy come to life. At least it was for us action designers."

Much like the first movie, Hemsworth will once again perform a lot of the stunts himself. And the actor could not help but enjoy the reality of the action scenes. "There's something so satisfying about that,” he said of taking part in practical stunt work. “Not to take anything away from the special-effects-filled sort of Marvel film, but you have a lot of help in post-production there. Obviously, I can't fly, so they help through me that. Whereas in this film, the action is grounded in reality, and so much of it is in camera. So, it's a different energy, and the preparation is a lot more extensive."

Directed by Sam Hargrave, written by Joe Russo, and starring Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani, and Adam Bessa, Extraction 2 will debut on Netflix in 2023.
