Fox's X-Men franchise is in a tricky place following the success of Deadpool and the relative disappointment of X-Men: Apocalypse. It is still a little unclear what the studio is specifically planning for the future, but a couple of projects still seem to be moving forward as planned. One of those projects being The New Mutants, which a new report claims may start shooting next year.

The Hollywood Reporter recently published a piece that gave a pretty big update on the future of the X-Men franchise for Fox. One of the things revealed in the report was that director Josh Boone may be shooting The New Mutants as early as March. It was stated that Fox may be looking to roll cameras in Spring, so we might have that to look forward to.

Josh Boone is probably best known for directing The Fault in Our Stars and has been attached to The New Mutants since early this year. Fox is going to have to cultivate some new directing talent to handle the X-Men franchise going forward, because Bryan Singer is not coming back and even Tim Miller decided to part ways with the studio on Deadpool 2 over creative differences. So guys like Josh Boone are going to have to step in and bring the next phase of the X-Men franchise to life.

For those who may not be familiar, The New Mutants are a group of teenage mutants who are still in training that has some overlap with the core X-Men team. Josh Boone took to his Instagram several months ago and seemingly revealed that the mutant team in this new movie will consist of the mutants Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock. As for casting? An unconfirmed rumor surfaced in March that claimed Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will play Wolfsbane and The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy reportedly may have signed on to play Magik, the younger sister of Colossus.

In addition to The New Mutants, Fox is moving ahead with X-Men 7, but it will supposedly be something of a "reset." The studio is also riding high with Deadpool, because not only are they moving ahead with Deadpool 2, but they are also already planning Deadpool 3 which will also introduce the mutant team X-Force, another long-rumored X-Men spin-off. There is still no word on a release date for The New Mutants, but if it does indeed shoot next Spring, expect to see it in 2018.
