The very troubled X-Men spin-off The New Mutants may still see a theatrical release, according to producer Lauren Shuler Donner. The horror-themed take on the mutant-centric franchise has been in the works for some time and was originally supposed to hit theaters in April of last year. In fact, a trailer was released back in October 2017. But since then, it's been plagued with delays, reshoots and behind the scenes controversy. Despite that, the final product could still wind up in theaters.

Lauren Shuler Donner has been a longtime producer of the X-Men franchise and, though she's stepped back a bit in recent years, is still part of the team. During a recent interview at the Television Critics Association press tour, Donner was asked whether or not The New Mutants was still going to arrive in theaters. This question was sparked due to recent rumors that it may be dumped to Hulu. Here's what Donner had to say about it.

"I'm being told, yes. As I say, I took a step back so that was under Simon [Kinberg]'s purview. I hope so. They worked on it hard. I do like the idea that it started off as more of a teen movie and the decision came to make it more of a horror film. I think it's a good idea. I want to see it be released. I'm hopeful that it will. I'd hate to see it thrown to Hulu."

Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) serves as director for the troubled project. Massive reshoots have been ordered and, as the story goes, he and the studio have been at odds over the final product. To further complicate matters, the Disney merger with Fox is set to be completed in the coming months. At that time, it will be Disney who is ultimately in control. Will they perhaps just cut any losses, forgo a massive and expensive marketing campaign and instead draw some attention for Hulu, which they will then own a majority stake in? There is at least some logic in such a move.

Lauren Shuler Donner has seen a cut, but not the final cut. Assuming it's not great, despite the money that's been spent, it may make sense to just dump the movie. Donner also reiterated that she's largely stepped back from the franchise in recent years, even though she retains an executive producer credit.

"I gotta tell you, I stepped back after Deadpool, before Apocalypse, and I haven't really been hands-on in terms of Apocalypse, New Mutants and Dark Phoenix."

Dark Phoenix, which has also undergone massive reshoots, will be the last proper X-Men movie released under the Fox era. Assuming The New Mutants does go to Hulu, it will be the last one to go to theaters. Either way, this long-running franchise could be meeting a very unceremonious end. The New Mutants is currently set to hit theaters on August 2. This news was previously reported by Slash Film.
