Next weekend, 20th Century Fox will bring its X-Men prequel trilogy to a close with X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set in the year 1983, 10 years after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past. After this movie hits theaters, the studio is developing a number of different projects within the X-Men universe, such as Gambit, Deadpool 2 and an untitled X-Men movie that has been confirmed to be set in the 1990s. One project many fans are looking forward to the most, however, is The New Mutants, which will be written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars). While there is very little we know about the story thus far, X-Men: Apocalypse star Alexandra Shipp recently revealed that she wants to reprise her role as Storm in The New Mutants.

Earlier this month, Josh Boone sent out a number of Instagram photos that revealed which New Mutants characters will be featured in the movie. The lineup included Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock, with many of those characters already rumored to appear. An unconfirmed rumor surfaced in March that claimed Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will play Wolfsbane, a.k.a. Rahne Sinclair, with The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy reportedly signing on to play Magik, a.k.a. Illya Rasputin, the younger sister of Colossus. That report also claimed that X-Men: Apocalypse star Alexandra Shipp will return as Storm, with Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) also being eyed to return. During an interview with IGN, Alexandra Shipp doesn't exactly confirm or deny the rumor, but she does reveal that she'd be more than willing to return as Storm.

"I can't say very much about New Mutants, but it would be awesome to do a little cameo, a little Where's Waldo?, Where's Ororo? in the background. I love Storm as a character. I'd love to reprise her in many different movies and be able to show people different sides of her because she is so multidimensional and I think that the people who love Storm at least as much as I do, really want to see that. We want to see Storm killin' it and kickin' ass. That's the best thing about her, how amazing and powerful she is."

20th Century Fox hasn't issued a release date for The New Mutants yet, but writer-director Josh Boone recently turned his second draft of the script into the studio. Production has already began on another X-Men adventure, Wolverine 3, which will mark the final performance of Hugh Jackman as the title character, set for release on March 3, 2017. Gambit is expected to start shooting later this year, with another rumor claiming that Deadpool 2 may be ready to start filming by this fall. We don't know for sure where The New Mutants fit into this lineup, since a production start date and a release date have not yet been announced.

It's also worth noting that Alexandra Shipp revealed in another recent interview that she would like Storm to cross over into Marvel Studios' cinematic universe in Black Panther, but that most likely won't be possible, barring an unprecedented collaboration between Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox. Still, Storm's presence in The New Mutants is most certainly possible, and there have also been rumors that Deadpool star Brianna Hildebrand may reprise her role as Negasonic Teenage Warhead in The New Mutants, since she was seen in Deadpool wearing The New Mutants costume from the comic books. Stay tuned for more on The New Mutants and X-Men: Apocalypse as we get closer to the May 27 release date.
