A pair of new images from the upcoming Predator prequel, Prey, further tease the feral take on the alien warrior that will hunt on Hulu next month. The first image comes courtesy of the latest issue of Empire Magazine, and finds the iconic movie monster emerging from the mist to demonstrate his bloody and brutal skills once again.
Prey will explain how the Predator came to Earth for the first time, with the extra-terrestrial landing in 1719. While this latest image teases a Predator that will be familiar to fans, there are some notable changes from the most recognizable version, such as the very different mask that hides those beloved mandibles.
Prey director Dan Trachtenberg has declared that his Predator will be the scariest yet saying:
"I wanted [the Predator] to be scarier than we've seen it before. It's intelligent and it has advanced technology, and that makes it even more difficult to take on.” The filmmaker went on to reveal that, while the Predator’s technology will still leave Earth weapons in the dust, this will be a less-advanced alien than audiences are used to. “But because the movie is set 300 years in the past, those things need to feel a little bit older than we've seen before, but also still far more advanced than what we think our earthlings would be able to handle."
A second image from Prey comes courtesy of SFX Magazine and finds the Predator doing battle with Naru (Amber Midthunder), a young Comanche warrior who protects her tribe against a Predator.
Prey is an all-new action-thriller from 20th Century Studios and the next outing in the long-running Predator franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (The Boys, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, and tells the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.
Prey Will Make Way for More Predator Movies
Prey will drop the Predator in a totally different time period than we’ve seen before — something which should reignite the franchise following a few...misfires. Director Dan Trachtenberg is hoping that this slight change in approach will make way more for more Predator movies after the release of Prey.
“There are a lot of exciting ideas for what could be next for the franchise,” Trachtenberg said recently. “The things that most excite me are the boldest swings and I think there's scope to do other things that haven't been done before.”
Written by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan, Treadstone), Prey stars Legion actor Amber Midthunder as Naru, alongside Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator.
Prey is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film on August 5, 2022.
