The Boys animated spinoff Diabolical hit Prime Video today, bringing a new arm of the comic book series to the platform and with the third season of the flagship show debuting in June there is still a lot to come from the series about the less than heroic “Supes” and the group of vigilantes attempting to bring them down. According to executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg the potential of the franchise is something that is only going to continue to grow as they are always coming up with new spin-off ideas.

Based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys made its debut on Prime Video in 2019 and became an instant hit. Having followed up its bloody and outrageous first season with an even more outlandish second one, there is only going to be an escalation to the violence and depravity to come in this year’s return for the series. With the series having already jumped into an animated arena with The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which features the main actors returning to voice animated versions of their characters, there is always a question of where The Boys could head next.

Speaking with Variety, Rogen and Goldberg talked about the new spin-off series, and went on to discuss how there is never a time when they are not thinking about what the next spin-off could be. As the animated series covers a lot of short 12-14 minute stories, such as the story of Laser Baby in the first episode, and the pair hinted that some of the series could end up being spun out into other series of their own. Goldberg said:

“We’re talking about spinoffs all the time. We’re working on numerous different ideas. Some will not happen, some will. But I think we got more franchising to do. We can grow. We can grow like Laser Baby.”

It will not be surprising if we hear that a fourth season of The Boys is given the green light sometime around the release of season 3, and it would be foolish to rule out another round of animated episodes in the Diabolical series. Currently, Amazon have already pushed forward a live action spin-off series focusing on a Supe college, which will essentially be a parody of Marvel’s X-Men. That show, which is yet to reveal its title, will focus on a younger group of Supes who struggle to control their powers while competing to “save” cities across America.

Amazon will obviously want to see The Boys franchise spread as far as it can go as they compete with a growing number of streaming platforms all looking to grab audiences with unique IPs. Comic book properties are big business at the moment and there are some big shows and movies coming in the near future such as Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaimen’s Sandman, Disney+’s huge line up of Marvel series, and HBO Max expanding their DC output with the likes of their Batgirl movie. Where The Boys goes next is something that is definitely being actively discussed, and it surely won’t be too long before more spin-offs are being announced.
