Spoonful of Sugar is a psychological horror film directed by Mercedes Morgan, and her second feature film right after her debut thriller flick Fixation (2022). Written by Leah Saint Marie (Price of Honor), the film stars Morgan Saylor (Homeland) as mysterious babysitter Millicent alongside Kat Foster (Gaslit), young Danilo Crovetti, David Yow (I Don't Feel At Home in this World Anymore) and Myko Olivier (United States of AI) along with several others. The film was produced at Vanishing Angle production studios under Natalie Metzger, Matt Miller and Katrina Kudlick.

The premise of the film, as seen in the trailer above, revolves around a young woman named Millicent who takes a semester off from her studies to concentrate on her thesis about children with severe allergies. Her target of study brings her to the home of young Johnny, a child who is mute, very sickly and allergic to just about everything around him, forced to wear what looks like an astronaut suit around his own home. His mother Rebecca is both overbearing and otherwise focused on her new book release, leaving husband Jacob often alone and dissatisfied in many ways, taking it out on a carpentry project in the backyard. Millicent grows close with Johnny and decides to introduce him to an alternative form of treatment called LSD. The two experiment with the drug together, and Millicent also undergoes a sexual awakening while growing close to Jacob, the two appearing to have an ongoing affair. Rebecca becomes distrusting of the two and takes her rage out on Johnny, while Millicent starts to unravel the family's secrets.

Director Mercedes Morgan divulged to Collider her thought process of putting together a film like Spoonful of Sugar, using the concept of a drug like LSD to "rip apart reality" and give a new twist on a story where things aren't always as they seem.

"Following my first feature, 'Fixation', I knew that I wanted to make something just as surreal, as we experience the world through our protagonist’s altered state. I wanted the filmmaking to also be expressionist, and uncomfortable, but taking place in a more familiar setting. Even though we’re a horror thriller, our plot twists still revolve around character at every turn, with a tone similar to a European drama. With every movie, I plan to rip apart reality, but in a different way specific to the world that we’re creating for the piece."

Spoonful of Sugar comes exclusively to AMC's streaming service Shudder next month.

Horror Films Have Been Holding the Spotlight Again Lately

After what could be described as a bit of a lull in the horror genre the past few years, following the downturn of the early 2000s cult franchises like Saw and Paranormal Activity, few titles have stood tall among the industry giants such as Marvel. Only a select few directors such as James Wan (The Conjuring) have recently been able to make their mark with films that have aged well and remain strong topics of conversation about the genre. However, this past year the cobwebs have been all but shaken off. The horror genre has suddenly, truly been flexing its muscles and versatility, giving us some genuinely memorable frights from the past year such as Mia Goth's downward spiral slasher Pearl , the viral sci-fi horror M3GAN, black comedy culinary horror The Menu, Christian Bale's The Pale Blue Eye, and Jordan Peele's latest installment Nope.

The horror train only continues to amp up this new year with M. Night Shyamalan's newest horror thriller Knock at the Cabin just hitting theaters. Other upcoming scare flicks include Scream 6, The Nun 2 which is the ninth installment in James Wan's Conjuring universe, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, The Exorcist remake, and Nicolas Cage's Dracula twist Renfield, just to name a few. With so much creativity on docket, it's undeniably apparent that the horror genre has all but regained its vigor, and hopefully will stay that way for at least awhile this time.
