Lots of people are wondering if Nicolas Cage will be involved with the upcoming sequel Face/Off 2, and as it turns out, the actor himself is just as curious. Last year, it was reported that a follow-up film to the 1997 action flick starring Cage and John Travolta was in development. Original helmer John Woo would not be returning as Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong) had signed on to direct the feature for Paramount. He has since clarified his intentions to make a sequel and not a reboot to expand upon the story first told in 1997.

As it stands now, Cage claims that no one has actually reached out to him to speak about the movie. This could be because the story is still getting finalized, though you'd have to think the filmmakers would ensure that Cage is on board before completing the screenplay so they'd know whether to include his character, Castor Troy. In any case, Cage doesn't have much information to provide on Face/Off 2 when asked about it by The Hollywood Reporter. He admits to finding the idea "exciting," but seems apprehensive about moving forward without Woo involved. One thing he agrees with Wingard on is that the film would need to be a sequel and not a remake.

"I have not heard hide nor hair about it. So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about National Treasure 3. It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure. Would [Face/Off 2] be an exciting movie to make? Oh, hell yeah. But John Woo was such a huge voice in that movie. It couldn’t be a remake. I think these filmmakers even said as much — that something like that would have to be a sequel."

We Still Don't Know if Nicolas Cage and John Travolta Will Return in Face/Off 2

It's implied that Castor Troy is dead at the end of Face/Off, so it's always possible that Wingard will be going in another direction with the sequel. Could it be that two or more new characters get their faces swapped with the previous film's characters referred to by name only? If Castor is dead, will John Travolta's Sean Archer still be making an appearance without Cage? Or is the plan to get both Cage and Travolta involved, but they just haven't been approached yet? At this time, we can only speculate, but let's hope Cage gets a call soon.

Face/Off was directed by John Woo and written by Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. It stars John Travolta as an FBI agent whose identity is taken by homicidal psychopath Castor Troy (Cage) after their faces are surgically swapped. Despite the bizarre premise, the film was a huge hit and is still looked back at fondly today by many as one of the best action films of the 1990s. It was never given a sequel, which is unusual for most blockbuster films, but thanks to Adam Wingard, we just might see someone else wearing Castor Troy's face once again.
