Previous reports claim Renfield director Chris McKay said that the star of the film Nicolas Cage went method on set. The director shared to Insider that Cage has been acting as if they’re still shooting even after filming. He said to Insider “whatever scene we did he would still be 100 percent living in that attitude after we stopped shooting”.Cage dismissed the filmmaker’s claim and said that as far as he can remember, he never did that and he cannot fathom why the director said that. He told THR,

“I just don’t have that recollection, I don’t know why Chris said that,” Cage said. “I had a lot of laughs in between takes with both Chris McKay and Nick Hoult, so maybe that was his experience, maybe because I still had the fangs in my mouth that made me speak a certain way, but that wasn’t my experience.”

Though the role requires Cage to do in-depth acting, the veteran actor believes that he can pull it off without diving into method acting. Despite the controversy, Cage excitedly shared details on his character, he said,

“With this Dracula, I was trying to fuse that which is scary and humorous even at the same time in the line delivery. It was just how can you be creepy and funny at the same time, that was the challenge.”

A Lovely Reunion for Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult in Renfield

Prior to starring in Renfield, Cage and Hoult have already worked together. They both starred in the 2005 film The Weather Man. At the time, Hoult was only 14 years old. Hoult was grateful that he got to work with Cage again. Since he was still young when they first worked together, Hoult admitted that he didn’t really appreciate Cage back then. On working with Cage again, he said,

“I think getting to work with him again as an adult gave me a true appreciation of what a master he is of the craft, how much he’s given to the cinematic world over the years, all of the iconic performances he’s given, and I think this is another one,”

Hoult further added that aside from being able to work with Cage again, he was really impressed with the plot line of the film. Upon reading the script, he knew he wanted to be a part of it. He said,

“I was like, ‘Oh, this feels very different. It’s a swing, but if it works then I think we have a fun movie.'”

Renfield hits movie theaters April 14.
