It's been nearly 25 years since the cult classic Face/Off blew away audiences with its crazy plot and even crazier performances by John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. The plot concerns an FBI agent, played by Travolta, hunting down a terrorist, played by Cage. Then, through a crazy series of events, the two undergo a face transplant, with Travolta later playing Cage's character and vice-versa. A sequel is in development, and Cage has recently spilled a hint at what the plot could be like in an interview with Collider:

"I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It's almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it's not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it's four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex. I think there's a lot of fertile ground there. I had maybe one meeting in an office, but I haven't heard anything since, so I don't know."

It sounds like the sequel could involve children of the main characters also undergoing face transplants, making an already complicated premise even more complex. However, no cast members besides Cage and Travolta have been revealed, so it's just conjecture as to who the actors playing their children could be.

Face/Off 2 won't have the original director, John Woo, returning, but Cage heartily approves of the new director, Adam Wingard:

"He's great, and I think we share similar tastes. We have similar sensibilities. I liked everything he did with Godzilla vs. Kong and I think that he's smart. He has respect for cinema and various kinds of iconography. I think it would be great."

Wingard talked about Face/Off 2 earlier, saying that writing the script is a "challenge" as he wants the sequel to live up to the original. It will be an "absolute sequel" going off the first film's events, not simply a reboot or remake. This isn't the first time Paramount Pictures has awakened one of their old films for a sequel, having released Top Gun: Maverick over thirty years after the original to rave reviews and a massive box office success.

The sequel to Face/Off is still in early development and does not have an official title or a release date. However, it will star Nicolas Cage, and John Travolta, with Adam Wingard set to direct. The original film was released in 1997 and was directed by John Woo.
