You can count on Nicolas Cage to return in Face/Off 2, the planned sequel to the famous 90s action movie from director John Woo. In the flick, released in 1997, Cage plays terrorist Castor Troy opposite John Travolta as FBI agent Sean Archer. The two have their faces surgically switched, resulting in the sworn enemies assuming one another's lives, unbeknownst to anyone else. It's a bizarre premise, but thanks to a solid director and perfect casting, it all somehow worked very well, making Face/Off one of the most popular action films of its era.

Last year, it was reported that Godzilla vs. Kong helmer Adam Wingard would direct a new Face/Off movie. It was initially presumed by many to be a reboot, but Wingard has since confirmed his plans for Face/Off 2 to be a direct sequel that acknowledges the events of the first movie. He could not verify if Cage or Travolta would be involved, perhaps to reprise their classic roles, and those questions remain unanswered.

If you were to ask Cage, however, he's clearly open to the idea of bringing back Castor Troy. In a new Reddit AMA, Cage was directly asked if he would do Face/Off 2, and here's what the actor had to say in response.

"Yes."

This doesn't mean Cage is officially involved with the sequel at this time, but what the actor is making very clear here is that he would return for Face/Off 2 if he's given the opportunity to do so. Meanwhile, it's unclear how Travolta feels exactly how the sequel, but many fans are certainly hoping for this to be a package deal. One returning without the other would feel like something was missing, given their relationship in the original film. Speaking more about the film with another fan in the Reddit AMA, Cage also expressed his love for the first Face/Off.

"Face/Off is my favorite action movie, largely because we had the maestro John Woo to direct. The process was a matter of getting video of Travolta’s dailies and trying to study it so I could copy his voice and movements. John Travolta conversely did the same with my dailies."

John Woo Isn't Involved in Face/Off Reboot, But He's Glad It's Being Made

Cage's interest is clear at this point, and it may just be a matter of the filmmakers actually getting in touch with the actor to move forward. Just last month, Cage separately opened up a bit more on Face/Off 2 in an interview with THR. He agreed with the notion that if another movie were to be made, it needed to be a sequel and not a reboot or reimagining of the first one. With that said, Cage also revealed that no one has yet called him to clue him in on the plot or ask about his potential involvement. As Cage said:

"I have not heard hide nor hair about it. So often these things we read about are just conjecture without any base or foundation to it. I feel the same about National Treasure 3. It’s been 14 years. There’s no there, there. So, is it fun to think about? Sure. Would [Face/Off 2] be an exciting movie to make? Oh, hell yeah. But John Woo was such a huge voice in that movie. It couldn’t be a remake. I think these filmmakers even said as much — that something like that would have to be a sequel."

Face/Off 2 doesn't have a set release date at this time.
