Del Toro co-wrote the enthralling film with Kim Morgan, based on William Lindsay Gresham’s novel. The official film synopsis reads:

When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

Nightmare Alley, the suspenseful psychological thriller, is nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Best Costume Design. It is also nominated for eight Critics’ Choice Awards, a Screen Actors’ Guild Award for Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett, and BAFTA, SDSA, MPSE, ADG, CDG, VES, and WGA Awards.

In addition, there are new cast interviews and behind-the-scenes clips released online in celebration of Nightmare Alley's 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD release today, March 22. In one interview, Clem Hoatley actor Willem Dafoe said of Deverell's sets, "The carnival was built outside of Toronto at a fairground. They just built it. When you'd go there, you'd shoot at night and it was so beautiful, with the extras and period costumes. You know, it was fantastic."

In the BTS clip, del Toro adds that the decision to build a carnival on location was based on the desire to make the film less cartoonish. He says, "One of the decisions was let's build the carnival on location, so we can be affected by the wetness, by the wind. When you are inside a tent, outside the tent breathes like a giant lung. If you build it on stage, it becomes like a cartoon. We rigged the earth underneath the carnival with thousands of feet of line that steamed through the ground, so the atmosphere would have steam all the time. We always kept it muddy, and with hay, with texture. We went after every detail."
